The Minecraft zombie apocalypse has become a genre of its own, with packs for very different tastes. These ten zombie modpacks range from demanding survival with more threatening infected to ruined cities filled with weapons and supplies worth scavenging.
DeceasedCraft
DeceasedCraft builds its zombie apocalypse around a procedurally generated city divided into districts. Horde difficulty increases as you survive, while equipment and technology give you ways to push farther into danger. The current 1.20.1 beta is a different experience from the older, more complete branch, particularly at the endgame.

- More than 60 handcrafted buildings credited to a professional architect
- More than 15 infected variants described across the full city design
- More than 100 weapons in the project’s feature overview
- An infection system: cure yourself with a golden apple or risk becoming a zombie
- Abandoned vehicles to restore, or vehicles to build yourself
- A skill tree, parkour and body-part damage systems
- Technology based on Create and Immersive Engineering
⚠️ The v5.10+ open beta is unfinished: the Wasteland and Abyss districts are absent, so its endgame cannot be completed. The author recommends v5.5.5 for a fuller playthrough. Do not add OptiFine; Embeddium is already included. Compatibility between beta worlds and the eventual v6.0 is not guaranteed.
✅ Verdict: DeceasedCraft turns Minecraft into a living—or rather, half-dead—city of scavenging routes and growing threats. Choose it if you enjoy feeling that time is working against you, while selecting the release branch deliberately.
Cursed Walking
Cursed Walking has more than 8.7 million listed downloads and a phase-based apocalypse. Stronger infected variants appear as days pass, including runners, brutes and custom creatures, so the danger grows alongside your equipment.

- Zombies active by day and night, capable of stacking, forming hordes and infecting players
- The Depths as an endgame dimension with distinctive biomes and loot
- The Drone and Feral, custom Depths enemies with special attacks
- Timeless and Classics firearms with add-ons
- Cities, bunkers, laboratories and ruins with custom loot tables
- Separate Forge branches for 1.16.5, 1.18.2, 1.19.2 and 1.20.1
✅ Verdict: The phase system gives Cursed Walking a useful sense of escalation. Early survival gives way to more dangerous threats and a stronger arsenal. It is particularly appealing with friends; the author recommends a dedicated server for larger groups.
ZOMBIEMANIA
ZOMBIEMANIA is a Forge 1.20.1 apocalypse set in a bleak, wintry world. Its author describes infected that hear voices and gunshots and react to blood, making noise and injuries part of the threat rather than only the number of enemies on screen.

- Voice and gunshot reactions advertised by the author
- Blood-scent reactions as part of the described infected behavior
- A wintry post-apocalyptic setting
✅ If you want sound to feel consequential, ZOMBIEMANIA is built around that idea. A conversation or a firefight can become part of the danger, making communication another survival decision.
The Last Dawn I
The Last Dawn I is a Forge 1.18.2 pack inspired by The Last of Us and Cursed Walking. Overgrown cities, dark interiors and limited ammunition create a slower apocalypse. The author describes fewer than 70 selected mods, keeping the design more focused than many huge collections without guaranteeing a bug-free game.

- More dangerous infected with altered AI and variants
- MrCrayfish’s firearms as powerful but relatively scarce tools
- Better Combat and close-quarters fighting that reward positioning
- NPC survivors and armed villagers in small defended areas
- Vehicles for supply runs along abandoned roads
- Storms and weather that reduce visibility
- Grounded machinery and industrial support described through Create-style systems and Immersive Engineering
- A First Aid-style health system that makes injuries matter
✅ Verdict: The appeal is a difficult but grounded co-op apocalypse rather than unrestricted chaos. A small group can divide scouting, construction and medical duties while slowly securing a neighborhood.
Apocalypse Begins
Apocalypse Begins is a Forge 1.20.1 pack about scavenging a modern or futuristic city. Its current 3.0.1 branch includes tiered loot, access-controlled areas, survival systems and character skills, but the storyline and complete progression are not yet available. The author directs players wanting a fuller campaign to the LEGACY continuation of 2.2.1.

- Medical items and disabled natural health regeneration
- A diet system as part of survival management
- Temperature as an environmental survival concern
- Passcodes and keycards for reaching protected areas and better rewards
- A large custom skill tree using Puffish Skills and Attributes
- Mekanism as the current branch’s core technology and automation system
- Survivor, Military and Criminal NPC factions with trading and basic interactions
- Tiered ores and loot for a longer equipment progression
✅ Apocalypse Begins provides a structured city to explore and systems to develop, but the newer branch is for players comfortable with unfinished progression. For a more complete playthrough, choose the author’s LEGACY branch rather than expecting a finished 100-day vaccine objective in 3.0.1.
Zombie Apocalypse: Last Days in the Wasteland
Zombie Apocalypse: Last Days in the Wasteland combines several zombie mods with a ruined landscape. The project has Forge 1.20.1 and NeoForge 1.21.1 branches, with The Lost Cities and Wastelands of Baedoor shaping its desolate setting.

- Zombie content from Infectious Zombie Apocalypse, Zombie Island, Day Zombies Rebooted and other included mods
- Enemy-behavior changes described through Epic Siege Mod and AI Improvements
- Thirst and temperature through Tough As Nails, alongside seasonal survival elements
- Environmental audio through AmbientSounds and Sound Physics Remastered
- Horror-style shader options such as Insanity, Hysteria or Spooklementary
- Ruins and structures through Additional Structures and Explorify
- Separate Forge 1.20.1 and NeoForge 1.21.1 releases
✅ Verdict: The atmosphere comes from several threats layered onto a ruined world rather than one isolated gimmick. Horror shaders reinforce that mood, but the underlying survival systems remain important even with those visuals disabled.
Day of the Dead
Day of the Dead emphasizes firearms, vehicles and survival equipment on Forge 1.20.1. TaCZ and additional gun packs supply the arsenal, zombie numbers rise over time, and Immersive Vehicles offers another way to move between threatened areas.

- TaCZ firearms with additional weapon packs
- Immersive Vehicles
- The eZWeight carrying-weight system
- Fracture Point tactical equipment
- Seasons, Dynamic Trees and varied mob sizes
- Simple Voice Chat and Simple Voice Radio
- An altered early game through No Tree Punching and Overgeared
- Custom shader configurations
✅ Verdict: Day of the Dead is appealing when you want weapons and vehicles at the center of the apocalypse. It also includes Create and Immersive Engineering, so it offers technical systems alongside combat. The author recommends 6–8 GB of allocated RAM.
Patient Zero
Patient Zero is a Forge 1.20.1 zombie pack whose author emphasizes optimization. No Baby Zombies removes a particularly annoying threat, Zombie Awareness changes infected detection, and Tissou’s Zombie Pack with Fresh Animations gives the enemies a different look.

- Zombie Awareness for more active detection and pursuit
- Fresh Animations and Tissou’s Zombie Pack for enemy presentation
- DragN’s Valiant Vehicles
- Simple Voice Chat
- Serene Seasons
- Thirst and temperature through Tough As Nails
- TaCZ firearms
- Environmental aging through Immersive Weathering
- Optimization mods including Embeddium, FerriteCore, ModernFix and ImmediatelyFast
✅ Patient Zero combines a familiar zombie-survival framework with a substantial optimization selection. Its author targets lower-end PCs, making it worth considering for a more modest computer. Shader settings, world complexity and the actual hardware still determine how smoothly it runs.
CraftZ
CraftZ combines a modern zombie setting with harsh environmental survival on Forge 1.20.1. Climate and seasons affect food production, while Zombie Awareness makes routine activities a potential invitation to nearby infected.

- Terrain and structures through Terralith, The Lost Cities and Structory
- Zombie Awareness for more active infected detection
- Hot and cold environments, seasonal crop problems and reduced animal availability
- Noisy activities such as mining or chopping can attract unwanted attention
- An Insanity shader option for a horror atmosphere
- Abandoned cities and roads with customized loot
✅ CraftZ is for players who want pressure from both enemies and the environment. When food, temperature and sound all need attention, a safe routine is much harder to establish. That will be exhausting for some players and exactly the point for others.
Modern Apocalypse: Zombie Edition
Modern Apocalypse: Zombie Edition focuses on TaCZ firearms and Create technology. Healing is more involved than eating food to refill health: you need to craft and use medical supplies, changing what counts as an essential resource.

- TaCZ firearms to find, learn and craft
- Create for base automation
- Medical-item-based healing instead of food-driven recovery
- Zombie hordes and shelter defense
⚠️ Do not add OptiFine. The author explicitly marks it incompatible; Embeddium, FerriteCore and other performance mods are already bundled.
✅ This is a focused combination for players who mainly want guns, machinery and a zombie-survival loop. Its listed release is for Forge 1.20.1, with a 4 GB minimum allocation and 6–8 GB recommended by the author.
Installation recommendations for zombie packs
Memory requirements differ considerably. For example, DeceasedCraft recommends 8 GB for its regular client and 10 GB for the Distant Horizons edition, while servers need additional headroom. Use the guidance for your actual pack and release rather than one universal allocation.
- Install the complete profile through a compatible launcher, such as CurseForge App or Prism Launcher. Pack scripts and configurations are part of the experience, not optional extras to reconstruct from a mod list.
- Set a suitable RAM allocation and leave memory for the operating system. Insufficient memory can cause freezes, but crashes can also have other causes; increasing the heap is not a universal fix.
- Do not add OptiFine where a replacement renderer is already included. Follow each pack’s own instructions, especially for older branches with different rendering setups.
- Keep the intended world-generation settings. Cursed Walking enables cities by default and explicitly discourages enabling them manually again because that can cause chunk-generation problems.
- Use the matching server package when the author provides one. Client and server archives serve different purposes; if no server package exists, follow the project’s actual server-setup guidance.
Which zombie Minecraft pack suits you?
- For detailed city scavenging and technical progression, choose DeceasedCraft, selecting its fuller older branch or unfinished beta deliberately.
- For phase-based escalation and a developed zombie framework, consider Cursed Walking.
- For climate pressure and alert infected, try CraftZ.
- For an atmosphere inspired by The Last of Us, consider The Last Dawn I.
- For a pack whose author emphasizes lower-end optimization, look at Patient Zero, keeping graphics expectations realistic.
Is there another zombie pack worth including? Tell me about it; I may try it and add it to the list.
