Vanilla Skyrim can make characters look like they are wearing cardboard chainmail: cloaks stay rigid, hair is glued in place, and hoods ignore the wind. Physics mods add movement to those static parts. For changes elsewhere in the game, see the Skyrim mod collections.
Faster HDT-SMP (FSMP)
Faster HDT-SMP is not a mod for a specific cape or hairstyle, but the engine that makes physics in Skyrim possible in the first place. The plugin processes XML configurations for capes, clothes, hair and other objects, making them react to character movement, wind and collisions. Without FSMP, most of the mods on this list simply won’t work, so consider it a foundation, not a standalone option.

- Processing physics of cloaks, clothing, hair and other objects via XML configurations
- Console command smp report to find errors in mod configurations
- Complete replacement of the old HDT-SMP with higher performance
The mod is installed as an SKSE plugin, and the FSMP version must match the game version, SKSE and RaceMenu – otherwise you will get crashes instead of beautiful folds on the cloak.
✅ Without FSMP, cloaks, hair and clothing stay stiff, as though made of cardboard. With it, fabric responds to running, jumping and wind. Install this foundation before the physics mods that depend on it.
HDT-SMP for Cloaks and Capes
HDT-SMP for Cloaks and Capes adds physics to volvaga0’s Cloaks and Capes. The originals hang stiffly on your character; Kirax adds SMP movement through FSMP without replacing the cloaks themselves.

Separately, it is worth knowing that the replacement of cloaks for guards in cities was removed from the mod. If every guard in the game got a flowing cape, the game would start to slow down in every city.
✅ The cloak now reacts to running and wind, rather than hanging as a static picture. For a character who often runs or fights, the difference is immediately noticeable, especially in open spaces like Whiterun or Riverwood.
Sons of Skyrim — HDT Physics for Cloaks Patch
This patch from Naru1305 adds physics to the cloaks from the Sons of Skyrim mod. Essentially these are just new meshes, xml physics files and one esp, which removes the bug with doubling the cloak. Nothing superfluous, just what is needed for the movement of the fabric.

Installed like a regular mod, but it is important that the esp of the patch is loaded after the main Sons of Skyrim file – otherwise a conflict in the load order can break everything.
✅ Sons of Skyrim cloaks stop looking like rigid armor parts and move as you walk or fight. A small detail that makes your character feel less like a doll.
Dynamic Artisan Cloaks
Dynamic Artisan Cloaks tackles a performance problem. Hishigami’s mod removes SMP physics from hold guards and civil-war soldiers, keeping it for the player and followers through Dynamic Armor Variants. The idea is simple: why calculate cloak physics for every guard when the fight itself is already costing you frames?

Setup is manual. Create a PE folder inside the Artesian Cloaks of Skyrim mod directory and move the meshes there as directed on the mod page. Follow the full instructions before installing; this needs more than a quick summary.
✅ Physics stays where you see it most: on your character and party. Guards and soldiers wear static cloaks, which takes some pressure off performance.
More Scarves — CBBE 3BA HIMBO BHUNP Vanilla — HDT-SMP Physics
devInTheDetails adds twelve items: eight scarves, a neck gaiter and three hooded cloaks, each with handcrafted meshes. They were made from scratch in Blender rather than adapted from existing assets, and the detail shows.

- Eight scarf options of different thicknesses and shapes
- A neck gaiter without physics, just for warmth
- Three hoods with physics, suitable for different shoulder pad shapes
- Ready-made meshes for CBBE 3BA, BHUNP, HIMBO and vanilla bodies, including OBody presets
All items are crafted at a tanning rack, and not bought from traders, so you should check the recipes on the mod page before looking for a scarf in the store.
✅ More physics-based clothing options that actually look different from each other, rather than recolored copies of the same scarf. For a character who doesn’t want to dress like everyone else, this is a good choice.
KS Hairdos — HDT SMP (Physics)
KS Hairdos – HDT SMP adds one hundred hairstyles from the KS Hairdos pack with hair physics, and the mod is completely independent – the main KS Hairdos is not needed for this. Hairstyles are connected like real hair through head parts slots, so they can be selected in the RaceMenu or assigned to NPCs directly. A separate file contains wigs that can be crafted at the forge and put on any companion.

- 100 hairstyles with hair physics via RaceMenu
- Separate wigs for companions and other NPCs
- Compatible with any hair retexture mods via texture replacement
All three components: mod, RaceMenu and Faster HDT-SMP must be installed in versions for the same version of the game, otherwise the hair starts to behave strangely or crashes the game.
✅ Hair finally reacts to running, wind and combat, rather than sticking out like a motionless helmet. Of the entire list, this is perhaps the most visually noticeable mod, because the hairstyle is visible in every dialogue.
HDT-SMP Vanilla Armors
HDT-SMP Vanilla Armors by furexarot adds physics to almost all base-game and DLC armor, from leather to dragonscale and ebony. Version 2 re-rigs nearly every set, removing an average of ten physics bones to reduce CPU load.

The list includes almost every heavy and light set in the game and expansions, from steel plate and elven armor to Dawnguard armor and vampire robes. Cloaks and clothes like mage robes are not included in the mod – the author recommends a separate Modernize mod for them.
Version 2.0 no longer includes a prebuilt ESP. If the old plugin is still active, some sets can look broken, so remove it before updating.
✅ The broadest armor-physics option here: almost any set you find moves as you run and fight. Particularly noticeable if you keep the vanilla armor designs rather than replacing them extensively.
KS Hairdos HDT SMP – for Khajiit
A separate mod from Arveth adds ninety-three physics-based hairstyles adapted to the shape of the Khajiit head. Hairstyles are hand-tuned to match face collisions and tested with vanilla Khajiit head, as well as Khajiit Overhaul and Enhanced Khajiit mods.

- Ninety-three hairstyles adapted to the shape of the Khajiit head
- Option to enable hairstyles for male Khajiit, with the risk of minor clipping
- Wig support similar to regular KS Hairdos
- Compatible with the Lykaios race
The mod requires the main KS Hairdos – HDT SMP and is loaded after it in load order, and collision bodies are configured there, in the main mod.
✅ The same idea, adapted for Khajiit: hair that moves instead of looking like a painted-on cap. A small but welcome detail if this is your chosen race.
XP32 Maximum Skeleton Special Extended (XPMSSE)
XPMSSE is a character skeleton that many physics and animation mods need. The XPMSE team adds bones used by HDT-SMP and CBPC for the chest, abdomen and other body parts, while also fixing weapon scaling on female characters.

- Bones for physics of chest, abdomen and other body parts under HDT-SMP and CBPC
- Settings for weapon carrying styles via RaceMenu or MCM menu
- Compatible with Nemesis and Pandora, although Pandora cannot change animations on the fly
When installing, you should choose one of three options: minimal, basic or advanced, depending on whether you need Nemesis and RaceMenu. The advanced version requires SKSE and Nemesis or FNIS.
✅ This is a foundation for physics rather than a visible effect on its own. Without a compatible skeleton, physics systems lack the bones they need. Install it alongside FSMP before the dependent mods.
RMB SPCH — Cloaks of Skyrim
RMB SPCH moves Cloaks of Skyrim distribution to SkyPatcher, removing leveled-list edits and many compatibility-patch requirements. RowanMaBoot combines three plugins into one and uses ESL flags to save full plugin slots.

- Distributes cloaks to NPCs through SkyPatcher without editing leveled lists
- Compatible with HDT-SMP, if you do not use esp files from the physics mod
- Customizable probability of a cloak appearing and its value by holds via config
- Compatible with Winter is Coming through the corresponding RMB SPCH mod
The original esp files Cloaks of Skyrim and Cloaks – Dawnguard need to be hidden or deleted, and SkyPatcher is installed in their place along with RMB SPID – Core.
✅ Cloaks from Cloaks of Skyrim continue to work with physics and without conflicts with other NPC mods. For those who have already collected a large list of guard and city dweller mods, this significantly reduces the number of compatibility patches.
How to properly install physics modifications
Installation order matters more here than with ordinary textures. Start with the skeleton and physics engine, then add the cloaks, hair and armor that use them.
- Install XPMSSE and select the appropriate option – minimal, basic or advanced
- Install Faster HDT-SMP and check that the version matches the game and SKSE
- Add RaceMenu if you plan to add hairstyles or wigs
- Install mods on specific cloaks, scarves and armor
- Run the smp report command in the console to check the configuration for errors
Which physics mods for Skyrim should I install first?
Start with Faster HDT-SMP and XPMSSE: they provide the foundation for the physics options here. After that, choose what matters to you: moving hair, flowing cloaks or the lot.
Missed some physics mod that you use yourself? Write to me, I’ll test it in the game and if it works, I’ll add it to the list.
