Dawnguard’s Serana is one of Skyrim’s more developed companions, but her repeated lines and uneven stats wear thin. I’ve collected ten mods here, from expanded dialogue and follower management to visual replacers and combat perks. For the rest of your modlist, the Skyrim mod collections cover the other categories.
Serana Dialogue Add-On
Serana Dialogue Add-On (SDA) adds thousands of voiced lines to Serana and turns her from a silent extra into a full-fledged character with reactions to quests, locations and your actions. The problem with vanilla Serana is that she barely comments on what is happening – SDA solves this by massively expanding the dialogue.

- extended combat lines and commentary for Dawnguard, main story, and Dragonborn missions;
- a friendship system that gradually reveals new topics of conversation;
- customizing clothes, learning spells, riding and cooking;
- a romance storyline with its own quests;
- support for custom player names and banter with other voiced companions like Inigo and Sofia.
Worth knowing: the author honestly stated in the description that some of the old lines for minor NPCs were once generated by a neural network, but these fragments are gradually being replaced with voice acting by live actors. Serana herself is voiced by professional actress Kerstyn Unger.
✅ Gameplay changes: Serana stops feeling like a background NPC and responds to how you play. If you want a companion who takes part in the story rather than just following you around, SDA is a strong foundation for that kind of playthrough.
Serana Dialogue Expansion
Serana Dialogue Expansion (SDE) goes a different route: instead of a general conversation expansion, the mod embeds Serana into the game’s three main storylines – Dawnguard, the main story, and Dragonborn. It solves a specific problem: the original Serana almost does not comment on events outside of Dawnguard, as if she does not notice that the end of the world is happening around her.

- reactions to key moments of the main quest and Dragonborn, taking into account your decisions;
- a separate quest for collecting books, which explains to Serana what happened in the world during her sleep;
- a romance storyline with its own dialogue branch.
There is an important nuance here: the author uses neural network voice cloning (ElevenLabs) to voice new lines. He also honestly notes that he took this step due to a lack of budget for a professional actress. The sound quality sometimes varies: in some places the result is very close to the original, and in others not so much. Take this into account if having live voice acting is important to you.
Install SDE before you first meet Serana in Dimhollow Crypt, or you may encounter bugs. The developers advise against combining it with Serana Dialogue Add-On: both rewrite the same scenes and their dialogue conflicts.
✅ Gameplay changes: Serana reacts to all three storylines rather than just Dawnguard. The catch is that you need to pick one dialogue overhaul; installing both creates conflicts.
Improved Serana
An older mod from 2019 that tackles a mechanical problem: vanilla Serana starts with few perks and underdeveloped stats. Improved Serana reworks her level, health, magicka, stamina, magic skills and Sneak.

- starting level raised from 1 to 50, and maximum level increased to 200;
- Serana becomes essential and no longer resets the sneak meter;
- necromancy has been removed by about 99% – the old game engine prevents it from being completely removed, so occasionally this ability may appear again;
- adds perks for Alteration, Destruction, Illusion and Restoration, with a substantial boost to Sneak;
- Serana receives a unique Daedric sword instead of the starting elven dagger.
The mod does not affect the appearance, face and clothing of the heroine, so there will be no conflicts with visual replacements. The author directly warns: you need to install the modification after the vampire has joined you as a companion, otherwise the character may be duplicated.
✅ Combat changes: Serana becomes useful support on higher difficulties, especially for magic and stealth builds. Pick this if combat effectiveness matters more to you than extra dialogue.
Serana Follower Framework
Serana Follower Framework (SFF) is not about additional dialogue or stat changes, but about how Serana behaves as a follower. Standard companion frameworks like AFT or NFF don’t work well with her due to her unique scripts, and she suffers from bugs such as being stuck in the crouch position or losing the Elder Scroll from her inventory. SFF was written specifically for this character and specifically corrects these errors.

- three following distances, as well as a “side by side” mode, when the companion walks not behind, but to the side of you;
- home management – you can assign her a rest point in your home with an individual sleep schedule;
- expanded outfit system with preview directly in inventory;
- hunger and blood feeding for vampire Serana, affecting her buffs;
- Basic riding system and automatic fixes for stuck animations.
Compatibility note: SFF and Serana Dialogue Add-On are incompatible because both change the same NPC behavior. Choose between SDA’s dialogue expansion and SFF’s behavior controls.
✅ Everyday improvements: Fewer random teleports, stuck animations and lost companions when you change locations. If you travel with Serana for hours, SFF deals with many of those recurring annoyances.
Simply Serana — A Visual Replacer
Simply Serana is one of her most popular visual replacers, with close to half a million downloads. Creator urbon offers appearance options through a FOMOD installer. Choose the combination of facial features, hair and textures that fits your setup there.

The main limitation: this NPC replacer conflicts with other Serana appearance overhauls. Use one full visual replacer at a time. The project was still receiving updates in early 2026.
✅ Why choose it: A straightforward, established visual replacer with a large user base, without demanding an elaborate body-and-skin setup.
Evigheden — SerketHetyt’s Serana Overhaul
Evigheden is a realistic, lore-friendly replacer by SerketHetyt. It stays closer to vanilla Serana than many alternatives, including the same author’s darker Anima Nera. A good fit if you want the original character refined rather than replaced.

- five eye color options (four to choose from upon installation, plus separate “cured” eyes);
- five makeup options that can be combined with any eyes;
- unique hairstyle with static models without SMP physics support;
- fangs remain even after treatment for vampirism – this is how the creator intended;
- standard armor is not included in the kit, armor must be selected separately.
Installation: Older game versions need B.E.E.S for the main file. An optional SkyPatcher file adjusts the hood to match Kozakowy armor textures.
✅ Visual changes: Serana stays recognizable while avoiding the harsh, plastic-looking features of some replacers. A good balance between the original design and a careful update.
Trueblood Serana
Trueblood Serana is the official visual replacer from the creator of Serana Dialogue Add-On, designed to accompany SDA. It gives her a consistent face for the project, whose earlier promotional screenshots used other appearance mods.

- standalone high-poly head without master-file dependencies;
- choice of skin textures – glamorous Bijin or more realistic BnP;
- three hairstyle options, including a nod to the classic Seranaholic;
- a unique hood tailored to the chosen hairstyle;
- A separate “healed” version of the face without fangs and with a lighter skin tone.
Installation: Version A requires you to build body meshes for your preset, such as CBBE, 3BA or BHUNP. Version B does not. Trueblood conflicts with full Serana replacers such as Seranaholic and ReImagined, so pick one.
✅ Why pair it with SDA: The same creator handles the dialogue and appearance, giving them a consistent style. If you already use Serana Dialogue Add-On, Trueblood is a natural visual match.
Seranade — A(nother) Serana NPC Replacer
Seranade is another full replacer that keeps Serana recognizable while adding its own skin textures and facegen. Author AnnAccident wanted to preserve the original character while adding a few personal touches.

- standalone BnP based skin textures, with built-in keyword for RSV compatibility;
- glowing vampire eyes with night vision effect and fangs that remain even after treatment;
- a unique hairstyle that is combined with a hood that follows its shape;
- minor height adjustments and the Light Foot perk for convenience in stealth mode.
Worth knowing: The original BnP skin-texture source is marked 18+, although Seranade itself adds no explicit content; this concerns body detail. Like Trueblood, it needs a CBBE base body and conflicts with other full Serana appearance replacers.
✅ Visual changes: Familiar facial features remain, with more detail in the skin, eyes and hair. A middle ground between barely changing anything and redesigning her completely.
Empowering Serana
A simple older mod from 2018 that fixes a narrow but annoying problem: even with a Sneak skill of 98, Serana sets off traps and gets spotted more often than she should. Empowering Serana adds perks without making her overpowered.

- Magic Resistance rank 2 and Light Foot to avoid triggering pressure plates;
- three ranks of Stealth, making her about 30% harder to detect;
- Fighting Stance and Bladesman for one-handed weapons, plus Hack and Slash for axes;
- Deep Freeze: frost damage paralyzes enemies with low health.
Consider the nuance: The author of the mod did not cut out the original appearance from the esp file, so if you use a visual replacer like Trueblood or Evigheden, place them in the load order after Empowering Serana so that they correctly overlap the face data.
✅ Stealth changes: Serana is less likely to give you away to a boss with one careless step. A small fix for a small problem that gets very annoying.
Serana Companion — SE
A niche, somewhat rough mod: AntonSkyrim228 made a separate Serana copy based on Lydia for compatibility with EFF and its follower settings, including weight and arm length. You can find this “Serana-2” near the golden tree in Dragonsreach, where you would normally look for Lydia.

- A separate NPC, not an edit of the original Serana, so her unique dialogue and ability to make Bloodcursed Elven Arrows do not work;
- the author himself warns about a bug with a dark face and advises installing an additional fix: Face Discoloration Fix SE;
- The project is maintained at a minimal level, and the developer himself calls it more of a personal archive than a ready-made modification.
✅ Who it suits: Players who specifically need EFF settings for a Serana copy and can tolerate the bugs. For most, SFF plus a visual replacer offers follower control with fewer compromises.
Recommendations for installing mods
Before installing, decide what you want to change: dialogue, stats, behavior or appearance. Avoid stacking two mods in the same category. Many problems here come from two dialogue expansions or face replacers editing the same NPC records.
- Set the base first – SDA or SDE for dialogues, depending on what is more important: the overall volume of conversations or integration into three storylines.
- Add SFF if you want behavior controls, remembering that it is incompatible with SDA.
- Then connect one visual replacer of your choice: Trueblood, Evigheden, Seranade or Simply Serana.
- Add stat mods such as Improved Serana or Empowering Serana, checking that their NPC edits do not overwrite your chosen appearance.
- After any changes to NPC entries, launch Nemesis or FNIS if you are using animation frameworks, otherwise some companion gestures (for example, removing the hood) may not work.
Did I miss your favorite Serana mod?
The list was compiled from the most proven and actively supported projects, but Nexus is updated every day, and probably some of you have your favorites that are not included in this collection. If so, write to me, I will test the mod personally and, if successful, I will add it to the article.
