23 Essential Kenshi Mods 🎮 2026

Essential mods for every Kenshi playthrough

Kenshi throws you into a brutal sandbox and expects you to survive. You start as a nobody, fight for every scrap, and learn by taking a beating. That difficulty is part of the appeal, but sometimes you want to smooth out the rough edges or see the world differently.

That is where Kenshi mods help. They can improve the experience, fix irritations, or add character without breaking the core game. These picks follow that idea, making the wasteland more interesting or removing unnecessary headaches.

Stackable Items

Have you ever tried to arrange a base or drag resources for crafting? Your inventory fills up faster than you can say “Holy Nation Patrol.” Carrying, say, ten pieces of copper ore at a time? Come on. This mod fixes that.

Kenshi mods for the first playthrough, including stackable items.
  • Increases the stack size for most non-equipment items.
  • Items can stack up to 1000 units.
  • Significantly reduces inventory clutter.

✅ Gameplay changes: Radically reduces inventory problems when trading, crafting and base building. Less time playing Tetris with your inventory, more time doing real things like building, exploring or escaping.

Stackable Items Lite

Here's a different approach to the stacking problem, an attempt to find a middle ground.

Kenshi mods for the first playthrough, including a light version of stackable items.
  • Increases the base stack value of almost all items.
  • Allows characters to keep large stacks in their main inventory and backpacks.
  • Aims at a balance between the vanilla version and greatly increased limits.

✅ Gameplay changes: Provides increased carrying capacity and simplified inventory management, without reaching the huge stacks of other mods. This makes carrying cargo more practical, but doesn't feel like you've completely bypassed inventory as an element of complexity.

Dark UI

Long sessions are part of Kenshi. Between training skills and crossing the enormous map, hours disappear. Staring at a bright interface all that time makes my eyes tired, though. This mod gives the game a dark interface.

Kenshi mods for the first playthrough, providing a dark interface theme.
  • Replaces the standard interface with a dark aesthetic.
  • Optimized for 1920×1080 resolution (with improved compatibility).
  • Gives the interface a stylish, modern look.

✅ Gameplay changes: Purely aesthetic, but it makes interacting with menus and inventory much more comfortable during long gameplay, reducing eye strain (looks like I'll have to buy new glasses soon). It also matches my preference for a more minimalistic interface.

Radiant True Dark UI

The community often tweaks things, and this mod is an example of a good idea – dark UI – being polished even more.

Kenshi mods for the first playthrough, offering an improved true dark interface theme.
  • Community-tuned dark theme.
  • Rebuilt from scratch for a more consistent design
  • Includes icon fixes, textures, and layout tweaks.

✅ Gameplay changes: Another purely aesthetic change, offering an alternative dark interface that may feel more polished or consistent than other versions. All to ensure that the UI looks and feels as good as possible.

Font Redux

Sometimes the standard fonts in a game just aren't that easy to read, or they seem a little chunky. Kenshi fonts may be like this for some players. This mod aims to fix that.

Kenshi mods for the first playthrough, changing the game font.
  • Replaces the standard Kenshi fonts.
  • Uses a smoother, more legible font set.
  • Compatible with most interface mods.

✅ Gameplay changes: Improves text readability throughout the game interface – in menus, dialogues, item descriptions, etc. This can make long gaming sessions more comfortable and reduce eye strain caused by looking at blurry or overly bright text (like character names at night, which someone mentioned).

Nice Map

Trying to determine zone boundaries or find roads on a standard map can be difficult. This family of mods replaces the standard map with versions that contain much more useful information laid right on top.

Kenshi mods for the first playthrough, offering a nice world map.
  • Replaces the standard map with improved versions.
  • Options for displaying zones, zone names, roads, grid lines and topography.
  • Several versions are available with different combinations of functions.

✅ Gameplay changes: Makes navigation much easier, giving you a clearer picture of the world's geography, political zones and travel routes. Incredibly helpful with travel planning, understanding where you are, and avoiding areas you may not be prepared for (like certain areas!).

Playable Races And Sub-Races

Why settle for standard Shek or humans when the world has so many strange inhabitants? These mods greatly expand character creation.

Kenshi mods for the first playthrough, including playable races and subraces.
  • Unlocks most humanoid races and subraces for character creation.
  • Options include Cannibals, Dead Hive, Fishmen, different Skeletons, and Hive variants
  • Leaves the races’ base stats unchanged

✅ Gameplay changes: Opens up roleplaying possibilities and distinctive playthrough challenges based on your race’s natural resistances, weaknesses, and other factions’ reactions to it.

Martial Arts Fast Dodger

Let's start with the most common complaint: the dodge animation takes forever. You dodge one hit, and by the time you recover, you've taken three more. This can make group battles feel frustratingly passive. This mod offers a simple, straightforward solution.

A Kenshi character with a robotic leg uses martial arts against an enemy in close combat.
  • Increases dodge animation speed by 50%.
  • Allows you to recover faster and return to battle after dodging.
  • Pairs well with mods that remove Matrix-style dodge for an even faster feel.

✅ Gameplay changes: This is a quality of life change that makes martial arts combat significantly smoother and more responsive. You'll spend less time stuck in animations and more time actively fighting. This makes playing as a martial artist more viable, especially in the early and mid game when your skills are not yet at god level.

Martial Arts Fast Dodger: Revised

The original is good, but what if you want a more finely tuned experience, especially when you're up against some bruiser with a Falling Sun? This reworked version takes the core idea and adds a layer of tactical calculation.

A man in black dodges bullets, illustrating a Kenshi martial arts dodge mod concept.
  • Increases dodge animation speed from vanilla 1.0x to 1.4x.
  • Introduces a slight delay to better synchronize dodging heavy weapon attacks.
  • Aimed at dodging slow, high damage swings more effectively.

✅ Gameplay changes: This version is for the martial artist who regularly faces heavily armed opponents. This small delay can be the difference between a clean dodge and getting hit, making your dodges more deliberate and skillful rather than just a general increase in speed.

Skill Based Dodge Speed

It never seemed logical that a rookie with Martial Arts skill 5 would dodge with the same base animation speed as a level 90 grandmaster. Kenshi is all about progression, and this mod brings that philosophy to your evasive maneuvers.

Steam Workshop page for the Skill Based Dodge Speed mod for Kenshi, showing a description.
  • Dynamically scales your dodge speed based on your character's Martial Arts skill.
  • Can reach a speed multiplier of up to 1.7x at skill level 125.
  • Offers an organic feeling of improvement as the character trains.

✅ Gameplay changes: Martial Arts training becomes more rewarding as you visibly grow quicker and more effective in combat. Ideal for long playthroughs, with a tangible improvement in combat performance as your investment pays off.

Sensible Martial Arts – A Martial Arts Overhaul

If you're looking for more than just an evasion tweak and want to change the whole rhythm of unarmed combat, this mod is for you. It rebalances the entire skill set for a faster, more aggressive feel.

Sensible Martial Arts is a mod for improving martial arts.
  • Increases the speed of backstep dodges by 36% and Matrix-style dodges by 100%.
  • Speeds up all martial arts attacks (except jump strike) by 20%.
  • Reduces overall damage dealt to balance out the massive speed increase.

✅ Gameplay changes: Martial arts shift from carefully timed heavy blows to rapid flurries. Lower damage means you cannot simply one-shot enemies, but faster attacks and dodges make you more mobile and relentless. A comprehensive change if you want a fresh combat experience.

Dodge Strafe

One of the most unintuitive aspects of Kenshi martial arts is dodging backwards, creating distance when all you want to do is stay in the face of your opponent. If you're tired of backing away from a fight just to avoid getting hit, this mod fixes that.

A Kenshi character fights an enemy with martial arts while dodging effectively.
  • Changes the standard back dodge to a side strafe.
  • Allows your character to dodge while remaining at melee range.
  • Keeps you glued to your target, ready to immediately counterattack.

✅ Gameplay changes: Your positioning changes completely. Instead of dodging, stepping forward, and attacking, you can evade and strike smoothly while keeping up the pressure. Martial arts feel like a ruthless close-range boxing match, as they should have from the start.

Trade Routes Intensified

Trading earns decent money, but the vanilla economy can become static once you learn the main routes. This mod appears to challenge that in a good way, turning trade into a more strategic activity.

Kenshi mods for the first playthrough, improving trade routes.
  • Adds more price modifiers for goods in different regions (0.5x, 0.75x, 1.25x, 1.5x and 2.0x).
  • Creates more varied supply and demand based on faction needs and location.
  • Makes trading-focused gameplay more dynamic and potentially more profitable.

✅ Gameplay changes: Transforms trading from a predictable cycle into a more strategic endeavor. You have to think more about what and where to transport, and about the risks associated with delivery. This adds depth to the economic systems, which I really appreciate.

Enhanced Shopping Economy

So, you thought that opening a store in the city would make you a tycoon, right? Then you realized that most of the NPCs are beggars, and those who aren't only want to buy your one piece of jerky. Making a living as a trader can feel like grinding against a system that doesn't really want you to succeed. This mod tries to breathe some life into Kenshi's commerce.

Enhanced Shopping Economy mod for Kenshi.
  • Gives NPCs a universal basic income so they have Cats to spend
  • Significantly expands NPC shopping lists, meaning they will purchase a wider variety of items.
  • Adjusts NPC income based on their social class or role, creating greater economic stratification.

✅ Gameplay changes: Running a store becomes a more believable and potentially profitable enterprise. Cities should feel more economically vibrant, with NPCs having more diverse purchasing power and needs. This should make player-controlled trading a more interesting part of the game, rather than just a way to dump loot.

Lights Tweak

You spend hours building the perfect desert fort or swamp shack, only to discover that proper lighting is its own kind of punishment. Ceiling lamps that strangely pass through walls, light sources that just look… wrong. This mod offers some spot improvements to Kenshi's lighting.

Lights Tweak mod for Kenshi.
  • Refines various light sources for improved and more consistent visual effects.
  • Fixes common bugs and anomalies, especially when placing ceiling lamps next to walls.

✅ Gameplay changes: Building and arranging a base becomes a little less frustrating. It will be easier for you to create the right atmosphere with lighting that behaves more predictably and looks better. It's a subtle change, but it can make your hard-earned sanctuary feel more like home.

Realistic Weather

Ever get the feeling that the Kenshi sky has about three moods, and two of them are “dusty” and “a little dustier”? Or maybe you've noticed rain that doesn't sound quite right, or acid that feels more like a mild nuisance. If the atmosphere sometimes pulls you out of the moment rather than immersing you in it, this mod aims to deal with that.

Realistic Weather mod for Kenshi.
  • Introduces a wider range of weather conditions across the map.
  • Fixes weather audio, wetness effects, wind behavior, and event timing
  • Changes acid on the ground, groundwater levels, and regional fertility
  • Slightly rebalances fertility in certain zones to encourage more diversity in base-suitable locations.

✅ Gameplay changes: Expect a more believable and diverse world. Weather will feel more influential, from its visual impact to how it interacts with the ground. This could mean new survival challenges or simply a richer backdrop for your adventures and outpost building.

Kenshi Enhanced — ReShade

Kenshi. A world that tells its story through every rusty ruin and windswept dune. It's a masterpiece of atmosphere and emergent storytelling… until you look too hard at some of the textures or the lighting seems… flat. You know the game has soul, but sometimes its visual presentation doesn't quite live up to the epic stories that unfold.

Kenshi Enhanced - ReShade mod.
  • Offers four different visual presets: Low, Medium, High and Mega High, suitable for different PC hardware.
  • Provides a selection of switchable post-processing effects using the numpad keys, including cinematic Depth of Field, Bloom, enhanced shadows and more.
  • Built on ReShade 4.0 to significantly improve Kenshi's visual fidelity.
  • Designed to enhance Kenshi's unique aesthetic, making it "prettier" without turning it into a completely different game.
  • Includes a convenient toggle on Numpad 0 to quickly disable all effects if they interfere with UI elements such as inventory or maps.

✅ Gameplay changes: This mod transforms the visual landscape of Kenshi. The goal is to make the graphics better reflect the rugged beauty and deep history of this world. Depending on the preset and hardware you choose, you may find yourself simply stopping to admire the view more often. Be careful, though: creating such beauty in the wasteland can be taxing on your system, so experiment with presets to find the sweet spot between beauty and performance.

Better Blood Pools

Combat in Kenshi is dirty and brutal. Seeing the consequences can add to the feeling. This mod just… makes it a little more pronounced.

Kenshi mods for first playthrough, featuring improved blood effects.
  • Increases the size of blood pools that form during combat.
  • Aims for a more dramatic and creepy visual effect.
  • Described as a simple, basic mod.

✅ Gameplay changes: Improves the visual impact of combat and the atmosphere of the battlefield. It's a small detail, sure, but sometimes those little details contribute to the overall feel of the game. Watching the fight get messy and seeing the pools of blood spread… yes, it adds to the brutality.

Realistic Blood ReTex

Beyond just the size, the appearance of the blood itself can also make a difference. This mod focuses on making textures feel more, well, realistic.

Kenshi mods for the first playthrough, improving realistic blood textures.
  • Offers a realistic retexture of the blood decals in Kenshi.
  • Aims to be the most realistic blood texture mod available.
  • Works seamlessly with other blood recolor mods.

✅ Gameplay changes: Improves the visual impact of combat, making blood textures more convincing. This is another layer of visual detail for players who want the game's combat to feel as gritty as possible.

Reactive World

The world of Kenshi keeps moving, but sometimes your actions don't feel like they have any serious consequences. You take out a big leader and… everything seems to stay the same? This mod aims to make the game world more dynamic and truly responsive to what you do.

Kenshi mods for a first playthrough featuring Reactive World.
  • Strives to make the world more dynamic and responsive to the player's actions.
  • Factions can change control over territories depending on your influence.
  • New events may occur based on who you defeated, formed an alliance with, or otherwise interacted with.

✅ Gameplay changes: The world feels more alive and less like a static decoration. Your victories and defeats can have visible consequences on the map, making your playthrough more unique and meaningful. It enhances the emergent storytelling that Kenshi is so good at, making your choices ripple across the water.

Recruitable Prisoners

Assembling a squad in Kenshi takes time. You find allies in bars, rescue slaves, or maybe hire mercenaries. But what about all those poor souls you knocked out and put in cages? This mod gives you the option here too.

Kenshi mods for the first playthrough, allowing you to recruit prisoners.
  • Allows you to try to recruit prisoners you have captured.
  • Recruitment is often not guaranteed and requires effort over time.
  • Adds a challenging new path to expand your team.

✅ Gameplay changes: Another way to expand your squad, often with recruits who have distinctive stats or backgrounds. Persuading someone to join their jailer takes effort, reflecting how hard it is to form bonds in this world. That creates a new gameplay loop around captured characters.

Bounties Galore!

Do you want to be a bounty hunter? There are bounties in Kenshi, of course, but you may run through them pretty quickly, or find the target list a bit limited after a while.

Kenshi mods for a first playthrough, including a board with many bounties.
  • Adds many more characters with bounties around the world
  • Increases the total number of potential targets for hunting.
  • Makes a dedicated bounty-hunter playthrough more sustainable

✅ Gameplay changes: More targets make bounty hunting a viable, interesting long-term playstyle. Tracking them across the map provides a lasting goal and a reason to keep exploring and fighting. Your list of people to hunt becomes much longer.

Bounty hunting for minor factions

Vanilla Kenshi often limits where you can turn in bounties, mostly to the main factions. But what if you're trying to curry favor with, say, Tech Hunters or Flotsam Ninjas?

Kenshi mods for the first playthrough, allowing bounty hunting for small factions.
  • Lets you turn in bounties to minor factions
  • Allows you to earn reputation and Cats from groups such as Flotsam Ninjas, Crab Raiders or Tech Hunters.
  • Opens up new ways to interact with factions and build reputation.

✅ Gameplay changes: Expands the bounty hunting gameplay, giving you more options on where to deliver your targets. This adds more layers to your interactions and potential alliances or rivalries across the map, making these smaller factions more meaningful to the bounty hunter character.

Well, are you ready for an unforgettable playthrough of Kenshi?

Don't forget to read the modding guide before installing anything. Mods for Kenshi definitely make the game richer, more comfortable or more difficult. They take the core aspects of the game – combat, exploration, building your own story, deep systems – and just… enhance them in different ways.

Kenshi is a great game that just needs a little help in the form of mods. Sometimes it's nice to have a good time enslaving Holy Nation patrols 😉
