Kenshi is brutal, lonely, and shaped by its main factions: the Holy Nation, United Cities, and Shek Kingdom. After a couple of hundred hours, you know their patrols and towns by heart. What if the world grew larger, with new powers rising from the dust or old factions splintering into rivals?
This is where modding comes to the rescue. With the right faction mods for Kenshi, you can completely reshape the political landscape, creating new threats, new allies, and countless new stories. This list covers everything from massive world overhauls that add dozens of groups to smaller, more focused mods that improve a single faction.
Universal Wasteland Expansion (UWE)
If you could only install one mod to completely transform your game, UWE would be a top contender. It feels less like a mod and more like a community-created addon. The goal here is to populate the world with content that fits into the lore, and that includes a staggering number of new factions.

- New factions, including crusaders of the Order of Chitrin and the terrifying Mechanical Hive
- Expanded existing groups, including Midland Hive and Northern Hive clans
- Introduces warring factions into previously quiet zones, such as the Natives and Shepherds in the Okran's Valley.
- Integrates content from many other popular mods into one package.
✅ Gameplay changes: The world feels infinitely more alive and dangerous. You'll stumble across factions you've never heard of, with their own equipment, patrols and objectives. The balance of power changes completely, making each playthrough unpredictable. This turns the wasteland into a chaotic, vibrant ecosystem of conflict.
The sheer amount of content can feel overwhelming at first, but it makes Kenshi richer and substantially expands the Hive.
Kenshi Genesis
Genesis is another giant among world overhauls. UWE focuses on lore-friendly expansion, while Genesis reshapes the landscape and offers its own take on Kenshi's gameplay. It divides the community, with people tending to love or hate it, but its ambition is undeniable.

- Adds many completely new factions with their own armor, weapons and cities.
- Reworks the layout of existing cities, making familiar places feel new.
- Includes thousands of new lines of dialogue and over 300 new items.
- Focuses on creating a more populated and active world.
✅ Gameplay changes: Genesis makes the world much more dense. You will see more patrols, more cities and more people. New factions populate the map, ensuring that there are few truly "empty" spaces left. This is a different kind of rework compared to UWE, leaning more towards reimagining the world rather than just expanding it.
A note about older mods like Minor Factions Amplified
You may stumble upon mods like Minor Factions Amplified. While this was a great mod that added rivals for the major factions, it is now outdated. In fact, the original author recommends using the Universal Wasteland Expansion instead, as UWE includes similar ideas in a more modern and comprehensive package. It's usually best to stick with actively maintained mods for stability.
26 New Factions
A huge package compiling one dedicated author's work into a convenient collection of factions. Ideal if you want a substantial amount of content focused specifically on adding new groups to the world.

- Adds 26 unique factions, each with their own personality.
- Factions are scattered throughout the map, filling some of the emptier regions.
- Includes new mechanics and content related to these factions.
✅ Gameplay changes: This mod makes exploration exciting again. Just when you think you know the area, you stumble upon a new band you've never seen before. It diversifies the threats and potential allies in the world without affecting the balance of the main game as much as a complete overhaul would.
5 New Factions
Looking for something a little simpler? This mod adds a handful of well-developed factions to the world, including a prominent "good guys" faction, which is a rare sight in the brutal landscape of Kenshi.

- Adds five new factions with their own units, bases and recruitable NPCs.
- Includes the Hunters, a benevolent faction that hunts animals and protects trade routes.
- Designed as a simple addition to your game.
✅ Gameplay changes: This mod adds some nice variety without overloading the game. Hunters in particular provide a welcome change of pace, offering a friendly presence in the wild. This is a great choice if you just want to add a few new encounters to your existing world.
Iron Will Faction
Sometimes you don't need dozens of new factions. Sometimes one really well done one is enough to change the game. The Iron Will Faction mod adds one highly detailed faction with a cool post-apocalyptic crusaders theme.

- A new faction with its own fortified city.
- Unique and high-quality armor sets, weapons and even prosthetics.
- Includes its own game start, quests, and recruitable characters
- The faction has its own patrols and presence in the world.
✅ Gameplay changes: This adds significant new power to the map. Iron Will are tough, well equipped and have a clear agenda. Their city provides an interesting new hub to visit or… conquer. They fit into the world surprisingly well.
Cannibals Expanded
Vanilla cannibals are mostly just a nuisance. They are numerous but weak, and after a while they become more of a chore than a threat. Cannibals Expanded corrects this, turning them into the terrifying horde they were meant to be.

- Adds new, more powerful cannibal units such as Mancatchers and Pulverizers.
- Gives cannibal leaders unique, improved armor and weapons.
- Establishes a stronger and more logical hierarchy within their ranks.
✅ Gameplay changes: You will learn to fear the northern coast again. A cannibal pack becomes a real threat that can overwhelm a mid-level squad, rather than a source of free combat XP. Cannibals feel like a proper faction instead of ordinary bandits.
Reactive World
One of my personal favorites and an essential install. In vanilla Kenshi, killing a faction leader can feel a little pointless. You collect the bounty, but the faction often carries on as if nothing happened. Reactive World changes that completely.

- Factions dynamically react to the player's actions.
- Destroying a faction leader or capturing a key city has real, visible consequences.
- Towns can fall to other factions, creating new conflicts and world states
- Bandit camps and faction patrols will indeed disappear once their leadership is eliminated.
✅ Gameplay changes: Your actions finally matter. Taking down the Dust King means Dust Bandits eventually stop being a problem. You feel as though you are changing the world instead of following a static script. Essential if you want to leave a lasting mark on the wasteland.
Living World
Living World adds another layer of dynamic interactions and faction conflicts to the game. It's a bit like a lighter version of Reactive World, but focuses more on organic conflicts and giving the player more options for interacting with smaller factions.

- Adds new world state triggers for city captures and faction conflicts.
- Allows the player to join several minor factions, such as the Dust Bandits or the Reavers.
- Introduces new campaigns and events that are triggered as you progress through the game.
✅ Gameplay changes: The world feels less focused around the player. You will see how factions fight each other regardless of your actions. The opportunity to join a bandit clan opens up completely new avenues for roleplaying that were simply not possible before.
Faction HQ Starts
Ever wanted to be the boss from the start? This mod doesn't add any new factions, but it does something that's probably just as cool: it allows you to start the game as the leader of an existing one.

- Provides 58 different game starts, one for almost every faction in the game.
- Start as the leader of large forces such as the Holy Nation or the United Cities.
- Lead mid-sized factions such as Tech Hunters or Anti-Slavers
- Take control of criminal syndicates such as the Dust Bandits or various Ninja clans.
✅ Gameplay changes: A fantastic mod for roleplaying. Instead of founding a faction from scratch, take charge of an established power. It completely changes the opening hours and lets you experience Kenshi from another perspective.
It's your turn to change the Wasteland with these faction mods
That is the list: mods to reshape Kenshi's struggle for power, from huge overhauls that change everything to unique starts as faction leaders. There is an option for every playstyle.
If you're new to Kenshi modding, start by studying the step-by-step installation instructions – everything is explained there as clearly as possible.
