You're standing at the edge. “Meet Hanako at Embers” is staring back at you, and if you know RPGs, you know what that means. The point of no return. Before taking that elevator into Cyberpunk 2077's final act, there's still plenty to see and do in Night City.
This is your final checklist for tying up loose ends, building the right relationships and preparing for whichever Cyberpunk 2077 ending you want. We'll cover essential character quests, Phantom Liberty and a few other things you shouldn't miss. Let's go!
The point of no return: Nocturne OP55N1

Nocturne OP55N1, the mission where you meet Hanako at Embers, triggers the finale. This confuses plenty of players, so let's break it down.
What exactly is the point of no return?
The point of no return is taking the elevator up to the restaurant, rather than the quest appearing in your journal. Before you do, the game gives you a big, friendly warning.
Does meeting Hanako really end the game?
Not permanently. It locks you into the final sequence for one to three hours, depending on your path. Once started, you can't return to side jobs until it's over.
Can you free-roam after meeting Hanako at Embers?
Yes, and this is the most important thing to know. After an ending, the game automatically loads a save made just before entering Embers, often adding iconic endgame rewards to your inventory. It creates a special Point of No Return autosave for this. The system lets you return to finish anything you missed or try another ending within the same playthrough.

Storylines to finish before the meeting
That brings us to the next big question that everyone asks before the finale.
Should you finish every side quest before meeting Hanako?
Finish everything you want first for the strongest story and all available endings. These quests are more than filler: they underpin V's journey and directly affect the choices offered in the finale.
Panam Palmer's story
If you want the Aldecaldos to be on your side (which opens up one of the most hopeful endings), you have to complete the entire Panam quest line. It's not just one mission, it's a whole saga.
Completing these quests is required for The Star ending. It also opens a romance for male V. Be sincere with her, and don't say you're only there for the eddies. Trust me.
Judy Alvarez and the Mox
Judy's story explores Night City's grim underbelly with real emotional weight. Completing her quests adds context and heart to the world, plus a serious romance option for female V. Her storyline brings distinctive dialogue and atmosphere to the final scenes.
The detective story of River Ward
River's questline feels like a classic noir detective story dropped into Night City. To see it through, complete:
Finishing his arc gains you another ally and the satisfaction of resolving his personal troubles. It's a welcome change from routine mercenary work, with a potential romance for female V if you make the right choices to save his nephew.
Johnny Silverhand and Rogue Amendiares

To unlock the secret ending, The Sun, where you assault Arasaka Tower with Rogue, you need to sort out your relationship with Johnny Silverhand. That means getting along with him during Chippin' In, then completing Blistering Love. Without these quests, Rogue won't consider helping, cutting off an important ending option. This also leads into Kerry Eurodyne's questline, another excellent arc worth completing for Johnny's backstory and a romance option for male V.
Speaking of Johnny's past, my Cyberpunk 2077 console command guide can help if you'd rather obtain his iconic equipment without the hassle: just spawn the items you need.

Other activities that add depth to the finale

Aside from the main quests opening the endings, there are several storylines that lend emotional depth and context to V's journey.
- Character relationships: Build connections with side characters such as the Peralez family. Their questline is among the game's most memorable, and their end-credit voicemails are hard to forget.
- Goro Takemura: Don't leave him! During the parade mission, you can save Takemura. Instead of just running away from the building, go back upstairs and help him get to the exit. His presence adds other options for dialogue in the future.
- Fool on the Hill: This is more than a collectible hunt. Finding all 20 tarot cards around Night City leads to thoughtful conversations with Misty and explores the game's mystical themes.
- Claire's racing storyline: The Beast in Me missions offer a welcome change of pace. This self-contained story shows you more of Night City and its racing subculture.
Why is the final mission called that?
The quest is called Nocturne Op55N1, a direct reference to Frédéric Chopin's famous Nocturne in F minor. Hanako Arasaka plays that melancholy piece on the grand piano as V enters Embers, setting the tone for the finale.
What about Phantom Liberty?
The expansion adds another layer to the final decision.
Should you play the main game or Phantom Liberty first?
You should definitely finish Phantom Liberty before meeting Hanako. The DLC is designed to be played before the main game's ending.
Does Phantom Liberty change the main game's endings?
Yeah. The decisions you make in Dogtown can open a whole new and very different ending for V. It also weaves new dialogue and context into the original ending, enriching the entire experience.
Can you play Phantom Liberty after meeting Hanako?
Technically yes, but I wouldn't recommend it. Return to a save from before Embers after watching the main ending, and you can start the DLC.

Mods to improve your time before the finale
For us PC players, mods can make the gameplay before meeting Hanako even better, giving more control over the pace of the game.
| Mod | Description | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Halted Hanako 2.0 | A simple mod that removes Meet Hanako at Embers from the constantly active main objectives. | Great for immersion: you no longer feel like you're ignoring the most important meeting of your life to go street racing. You have to call Hanako yourself to start the finale. |
| Live A Little | Adjusts quest timers to give you breathing room before NPC calls. Also increases some quest-related expenses to encourage preparation. | Ideal for role-playing. It makes the world less frantic and lets you explore at your own pace without Johnny or someone else constantly nagging. |
Final preparations before the point of no return
Meeting Hanako at Embers is the culmination of your Night City journey. The stories you've finished, people you've helped and relationships you've built all matter. Taking the time for these key quests shapes V's legacy, rather than simply ticking boxes.

That way, when you finally sit across from Hanako, you'll have the support and options you need to face what comes next. Take your time, choom. The finale can wait.
Answers to other questions
What level should I be before meeting Hanako?
You could probably manage at level 18-20, but most experienced players recommend at least level 35+ with maximum Street Cred. That gives you access to better equipment and cyberware, making the final fights more manageable.
How do I know if I missed a quest before the end?
The game has no tracker for missed quests, unfortunately. Check your journal for unfinished side jobs, especially Panam, Judy, River and Johnny/Rogue. If their questlines have gone quiet, you've probably finished them.
How many endings are there and which one is the best?
There are several main endings with variations: The Star, the nomad ending; Temperance, where Johnny takes control; and the secret ending. There is no best one. It depends on the story you want for V.
What rewards will I get for different endings?
Each ending route provides particular iconic equipment after returning to your save. That can include the Ba Xing Chong shotgun from the secret ending or Rogue's pistol.
Can you return to the point of no return after Phantom Liberty's Tower ending?
No. The DLC's new Tower ending conclusively ends V's story. If you choose it, you won't return to the Point of No Return save. The game explicitly warns you. It's the end of the game.
What happens to Johnny in each of the endings?
His fate varies greatly. In Temperance, he takes V's body. In other endings, he may join Alt Cunningham in cyberspace or disappear. His destination depends directly on your final choice.
Do romantic choices affect the endings?
A romance partner, whether Panam, Judy, River or Kerry, adds unique scenes, dialogue and epilogue voicemails. These make the ending more personal and often more emotional.
What should I buy or do before the point of no return?
Spend your eddies! Buy all the cyberware you want, buy any legendary weapon you like, and stock up on crafting components. Money is useless during the final sequence of missions.
Can V really survive in any ending?
That's the big philosophical question, isn't it? Even in endings where V lives, it's often on borrowed time or accompanied by questions about consciousness and identity. There is no straightforward happily-ever-after survival here.
Why isn't my save working after finishing an ending?
If your post-finale save isn't working correctly, reload the Point of No Return autosave and try another ending to see whether the bug disappears.
