Do you play Kenshi solo? Well, you're crazy. I respect you. There's something incredibly satisfying about surviving in the wasteland with just your wits, a rusty sword, and, if you're lucky, both legs. But let's be honest: vanilla Kenshi can be brutal for solo players. You're basically a walking snack for cannibals, slave traders, and any random Beak Thing that decides you look delicious.
This is where mods come to the rescue. The right selection of mods can transform your single-player experience from a constant death spiral into true strategy gameplay. After spending way too many hours getting my character eaten alive (seriously, why did I think approaching the Fogmen was a good idea?), I've rounded up the best Kenshi mods for solo playthroughs that will make your lone wanderer's journey truly enjoyable.
Martial Village
Sometimes you need a structured approach to training that fits logically into the world of the game. This mod adds training to the dojo with full integration of quests for those who are learning martial arts.

- Dojo based training system
- Built-in quest system
- Designed for martial artists
- Convenient structure for solo leveling
✅ Gameplay changes: Adds atmospheric hand-to-hand combat training with story context.
Strength Training
Forget the gym; sometimes you need to train on the move. This mod adds heavy books in different weights that you can carry while walking laps around safe areas such as the Hub.

- Heavy books for training Strength
- Different weight categories
- Training in safe areas
- Train while traveling
✅ Gameplay changes: Train Strength while traveling through safe areas without risking a fight.
Gym Training Tools
Want a proper gym at your base? This mod adds four exercise machines with fitting animations, turning your home into a training center.

- Four machines: a treadmill, pull-up bar, bench press, and Tesla coil
- Train Athletics, Strength, and Toughness
- Cheap to build and research; only 1 book required
- Normal training animations for atmosphere
- Chair and throne variants for idle training
✅ Gameplay changes: Provides comprehensive physical training with visual feedback and realistic animations.
Training Weapons
Trying to level up your weapon skills without the risk of dying is a constant headache for a solo player. This mod adds seven types of training weapons so you can practice without turning into a chop for bandits.

- Seven training weapon types: katana, sabre, blunt, hacker, heavy, polearm, and martial arts
- Safe training without the risk of death
- Requires only research level 1
- Reduced materials costs for crafting
- There are versions with and without damage
✅ Gameplay changes: Allows weak characters to safely develop weapon skills without combat risks.
Sensible Training — A Training Dummy Overhaul
Vanilla training dummies are practically useless decorations. This mod makes them useful for training Dodge, Martial Arts, and Turrets up to level 30.

- Expands the functionality of training dummies
- Covers Dodge, Martial Arts, and Turrets
- Training is available up to level 30
- Different training dummies for different skills
✅ Gameplay changes: Provides the opportunity for comprehensive leveling when real combat is too dangerous.
Expanded Vanilla Armor
A single person needs to carefully select equipment. This mod adds new armor, assembled from vanilla pieces, which fits perfectly into Kenshi's style and does not break the balance.

- Armor assembled from vanilla elements
- Fits perfectly into the Kenshi atmosphere
- Balanced stats
- More equipment options for a solo character
✅ Gameplay changes: Gives more armor options without breaking the game balance.
Slopeless
The Kenshi building system has an annoying habit of prohibiting construction in prime locations due to crooked terrain. This mod opens up places where it was previously impossible to build.

- Allows building on steep slopes
- Removes most terrain restrictions
- Expands the list of locations for the base
- Ideal for choosing a tactically useful base site
✅ Gameplay changes: Dramatically increases the choice of base locations, especially for defense.
Copper Ore Drill
Mining ore by hand when you are alone is hard labor. This automatic drilling rig allows you to build bases even where copper is scarce, without spending your entire game time swinging a pickaxe.

- Automatic copper mining
- Less manual work
- Allows you to live in resource-poor areas
- Required to manage a base solo
✅ Gameplay changes: Removes the grind on mining, allowing you to do more interesting things.
Better Building System
Vanilla construction is held together by duct tape and prayers. This mod fixes most problems with building placement and interiors.

- Fixes problems with interiors
- Improved placement mechanics
- Less fuss with console commands
- More reliable construction overall
✅ Gameplay changes: Building a base becomes a manageable job rather than a test of your stress tolerance.
Enhanced Shopping Economy
Solo characters rely on trade because they cannot bring a huge raiding squad. This mod makes the economy more balanced and active.

- More active behavior of NPC buyers
- Wider shop inventories
- Balanced economy
- More trading opportunities
✅ Gameplay changes: Makes the economic part of the game viable and interesting for a single player.
The Lone Wanderer
The vanilla start of the Wanderer is not bad, but this mod specifically reworks it for a solo or small group (up to 4 people), shifting the focus of the narrative.

- Maximum of 5 people in a faction (including you)
- Ban on construction on land – no cities of your own
- Build inside existing buildings or on rooftops
- Hydroponics is the only way to grow food
- Four starting cities: Stoat, Bad Teeth, Shark and the Hub
- Each location has its own pros and cons
- Encourages living in apartments instead of building outposts
✅ Gameplay changes: Gives a more focused and proper start for the single player.
Solo Slave Start
The vanilla Slaves start gives you a partner, which defeats the point of playing solo. This mod lets you begin as a lone slave. I have also linked a Steam version that lets you choose a faction.

- Real start as a solo slave
- No unnecessary partners
- Authentic start from the bottom
- The perfect premise for a story
✅ Gameplay changes: Delivers the intended experience of surviving from the very bottom.
Enhanced Survival Challenge
Makes resource management genuinely difficult, cutting your income and increasing difficulty across the board.

- Reduced resource extraction
- Increased overall difficulty
- Makes you think strategically
- Ideal for experienced players
Gameplay changes: Turns a relaxed game into a real survival challenge. For solo-playing maniacs.
Hardcore Ultra Realism
Is vanilla too easy? This overhaul turns Kenshi into a brutal, realistic survival simulator where staying alive is an achievement and thriving is legendary.

- Complete overhaul of combat with realistic damage
- Fast leveling, but life is very short
- Realistic running speed (maximum 16 mph at level 99)
- Predators can really eat you alive and are extremely dangerous
- No random homeless recruits – only unique characters
- Realistic item weights and price reworking
- Rapid healing that consumes hunger reserves
✅ Gameplay changes: Transforms Kenshi from a time-wasting simulator into a real strategic challenge.
Black Scratch Wanderer Start
Sometimes you just want to change the location without changing the concept of the character. This simple mod throws you into the Black Scratch instead of the Hub, offering an alternative start.

- Alternative start of the Wanderer
- Start in Black Scratch
- Simple change of location
- Other options at the beginning of the game
✅ Gameplay changes: Diversifies the start while maintaining the Wanderer mechanics.
Impossible Start

For complete maniacs looking for maximum pain: start without limbs, with a debt of -1,000,000,000 Cats and universal hatred. I recommend creating only Skeletons, because you still don’t have limbs 😃
- No arms or legs at the start
- 1 billion Cats debt
- Hatred from all factions
- Spawn in cannibal territory
✅ Gameplay changes: Creates the highest possible challenge in Kenshi.
Recommended load order
To prevent mods from conflicting, load order is important. Here's a working version:
- Major changes (races, stats)
- New starts and scenarios
- Building improvements
- Mods for training and combat
- Economy
- Difficulty settings
- Improved quality of life (QoL)
Always test your mod setup with a test character. Nothing is worse than discovering a bug after 20 hours.
Preparing for a solo playthrough
Kenshi solo is a completely different beast compared to playing as a squad. These mods don't make the game easy, they make it playable as a solo player.
Your character's legs will still be chewed off by Beak Things (it's basically a rite of passage), but at least you'll have the tools to level up and fight back.
Know a mod that makes a real difference without breaking the game? Write to me; I will check it and add it, provided it fits the overall mod setup.
