Ways To Reset Stats In Cyberpunk 2077 [Attributes & Perks]
Guide on how to reset stats in Cyberpunk 2077.

How to Reset Stats, Attributes & Perks in Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty

So you’ve built yourself into a corner with V’s stats and now you’re staring at your character sheet wondering how you ended up as a mediocre netrunner-reflex hybrid who can’t do anything particularly well. Been there. Cyberpunk 2077 lets you reset attributes and perks, but there’s a catch – you only get one official attribute reset per playthrough. The perk system? That’s way more forgiving. I’m gonna walk you through every method available, from the free in-game option to mods and console commands that break the rules entirely. Plus we’ll cover what to do when the game tells you “nope, can’t reset those attributes” because your cyberware is being difficult.

Before we get into fixing your build, you might want to check out my main Cyberpunk 2077 resource hub where I’ve been collecting guides and workarounds for this game since launch.

What’s the difference between attributes and perks?

Right, so attributes are your five core stats – Body, Reflexes, Technical Ability, Intelligence, and Cool. These go up to level 20 each and they determine what perks you can even access. You get 59 attribute points total if you hit the level 60 cap (which requires the Phantom Liberty DLC, by the way). Math doesn’t lie here, you can’t max everything. Not even close.

All attributes reset to baseline in Cyberpunk 2077.
After a reset, all your attribute points are refunded, ready to be redistributed.

Perks are the smaller abilities inside each attribute tree. They give you passive bonuses, new moves, damage multipliers, that sort of thing. Way more flexible than attributes because you can reset these whenever you want, no cost, unlimited times.

The game wants you to specialize. Spreading yourself thin across all five attributes just makes V… okay at everything instead of good at something specific. And honestly? That’s a terrible feeling in combat.

Method 1: The official way to reset attributes

After the 2.0 update dropped, CD Projekt Red added a built-in attribute reset feature. Here’s how it works:

Cyberpunk 2077 reset attributes button in the character menu.
This “Reset Attributes” button is your one and only official chance to respec your core stats.
  1. Open your main menu and go to the Character tab
  2. Look at the bottom-left corner of your screen
  3. Click that Reset Attributes button sitting there
  4. Confirm when the pop-up asks if you’re really sure

Your attribute points all return to baseline. You get to redistribute them however you want. Feels pretty good, actually… until you realize you can only attributes perks once per playthrough. Yep, one time. That’s it. No eddies required, completely free, but once you click that button it’s gone forever.

The devs want you to think about your build choices. I get it from a design perspective, but it’s still kinda annoying if you’re the type who likes to experiment with different playstyles. (Which, let’s be real, most of us are.)

Wait until you’re around level 20 or starting Act 2 before using your reset. By then you’ll actually understand how the game plays and what build you really want to run. Resetting at level 5 because you put two points into the wrong attribute? That’s just wasting your one chance.

When the game won’t let you reset attributes

Sometimes you’ll click that button and Cyberpunk throws an error message at you. “Cannot reset attributes.” Super helpful, right?

Cyberpunk 2077 unequip cyberware warning message for perk reset.
The game will block a reset if your cyberware capacity is tied to perks you’re trying to refund.

The issue? You’ve got cyberware equipped that requires perks affecting cyberware capacity. The game won’t let you reset because removing those attribute points would unequip your chrome, and apparently that’s too complicated for the system to handle automatically.

Fix it like this:

  • Unequip all your cyberware in the affected slots
  • Go refund the perks that unlock those cyberware slots
  • Now try resetting attributes again
  • Redistribute your points however you want
  • Buy back the perks you need
  • Re-equip your cyberware

Yeah, it’s tedious. But it works.

Method 2: Pre-2.0 System

Before the 2.0 update, the respec system worked differently:

Players needed to purchase an item called Tabula e-Rasa from Ripperdocs for 100,000 eurodollars (later reduced to 25,000 in Patch 1.2). This item only reset perk points, not attributes. The system was removed entirely in Patch 1.3 and replaced with the current free menu-based approach.

Method 3: Console commands for PC players who want unlimited resets

If you’re on PC, console commands are your friend. You’ll need the Cyber Engine Tweaks mod installed first (grab it from Nexus Mods if you don’t have it already).

Once that’s running, press the tilde key (~) to open the console and paste one of these commands:

To reset all perks:

PlayerDevelopmentSystem.GetInstance(Game.GetPlayer()):GetDevelopmentData(Game.GetPlayer()):ResetNewPerks()

To reset attributes:

PlayerDevelopmentSystem.GetInstance(Game.GetPlayer()):GetDevelopmentData(Game.GetPlayer()):ResetAttributes()

Hit Enter and your points are back. You can use these commands as many times as you want. The downside? Steam achievements get disabled for that session. Restart the game without mods if you want achievements back.

If you're not comfortable with console commands and want to learn how to use them, there's a whole world of possibilities. I've got another guide covering Cyberpunk 2077 console commands that goes way beyond just stat resets.

Cyberpunk 2077 console commands guide

Honestly? For a single-player RPG, this feels like the way it should work by default. The one-time limit on attribute resets always felt arbitrary to me.

Method 4: Mods that remove the one-time reset limit

Several mods just straight-up remove that annoying one-reset limitation. If you’re already running mods anyway (and let’s face it, most PC players are), these are worth grabbing.

Reset Attributes Always Available (Redscript)

This one keeps the reset button permanently available in your character menu. No cost, unlimited uses, works exactly like the official reset except you can do it whenever you feel like it.

Cyberpunk 2077 reset attributes always available mod enabled.

Installation:

  • Download and install redscript first (it’s a requirement)
  • Grab the mod from Nexus Mods
  • Extract the files to your game’s root folder
  • The file should end up here: \Cyberpunk 2077\r6\scripts\ResetAttributesAlwaysAvailable.reds

Reset Attributes Multiple Times (Gameplay Balanced)

This one adds a cost system if you want something that feels more “lore-friendly.” Each reset costs eddies – starts at 100,000 and goes up to 5x that amount if you keep resetting. You can configure the exact costs through Mod Settings or the config file.

Alt attribute: Cyberpunk 2077 reset attributes multiple times mod cost screen.

I kinda like this approach, actually. Unlimited free resets feel a bit too consequence-free, but having to pay a chunk of eddies makes you at least think about whether you really need that respec right now. Fits the game’s corpo-capitalist vibe too 🤔

Installation:

  • Install redscript
  • (Optional but recommended) Install Mod Settings
  • Download and extract to game root folder

Resetting perks is way easier

Unlike attributes, perk resets are actually generous. You can do this as many times as you want, whenever you want, zero cost. Here’s the process:

How to reset perks in the Cyberpunk 2077 perk tree menu.
Resetting perks is free and unlimited just hover over any perk to refund the point.
  1. Navigate to your Character menu
  2. Select whichever attribute contains the perk you want to refund
  3. Hover over any perk you’ve already acquired (they’ll be marked yellow)
  4. Press the refund button – it shows up in the tooltip (usually middle mouse button on PC, Y on Xbox, Triangle on PlayStation)
  5. Boom, perk point refunded immediately
Resetting perks in the Cyberpunk 2077 Technical Ability tree.
Hover over a perk amd hit middle mouse button to refund the perk point.

A few things to keep in mind though. You have to refund dependent perks before parent perks. The game won’t let you refund something if other perks are still relying on it. Also, there’s no “refund all” button, so if you’re resetting your entire perk tree you’re clicking through each one individually. Gets old fast but at least it’s free.

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve respecced my perks mid-playthrough. Testing different perk combos is basically free, so there’s no reason not to experiment until you find something that clicks.

After messing around with attribute points for a while, you might want to grab some gear you missed earlier in the game – I've got a guide on how to get iconic weapons you missed in Cyberpunk 2077 that covers tracking down those unique items after the quests are long done.

Save editors give you complete control (but use with caution)

Save editors are the nuclear option. Tools like CyberCAT-SimpleGUI or CyberpunkSaveEditor let you modify basically anything in your save file – attribute values, perk points, inventory, character appearance, you name it.

What you can do:

  • Directly modify any attribute value
  • Add perk points out of thin air
  • Edit inventory items and quantities
  • Change character appearance post-creation
  • Adjust hidden stats and modifiers

What can go wrong:

  • Save file corruption if you mess something up
  • Game instability if you set values outside normal ranges
  • Features might break after game updates
  • You could accidentally make the game way less fun by giving yourself everything

Always, always backup your saves before editing them. I’ve seen too many people brick their 100+ hour playthroughs because they didn’t make a backup first. Not worth the risk, so you’d better use mods or console commands.

How many points do you actually get at max level?

With the Phantom Liberty DLC, the level cap is 60. Without it, you’re stuck at level 50. Street Cred maxes out at 50 either way.

Total points at level 60:

  • 59 attribute points (one per level up, starting from level 2)
  • 59 perk points (one per level up)
  • Extra 10 perk points from skill progression (hit level 15 and 35 in each of the 5 skills)

So you’re looking at roughly 69 perk points total if you max everything out. That’s… actually not that many when you see how many perks exist in the game. You still have to make choices about what to prioritize.

The math on attributes is even tighter. 59 points across five attributes that each go to 20? You’re maxing maybe two attributes and getting a third one halfway there. Build specialization isn’t optional in this game, it’s mandatory.

When should you use your one reset?

Timing matters here since you only get one shot. Here’s my advice after putting way too many hours into this game:

Good times to reset:

  • You’re level 15-20 minimum and understand the systems
  • You’ve finished several main story missions and tried different combat styles
  • You know what playstyle you actually enjoy (not what you thought you’d enjoy during character creation)
  • You’re about to commit to a specific build and want everything optimized

Bad times to reset:

  • You’re level 5 and barely understand the game yet
  • You saw a YouTube build video and want to copy it without testing anything first
  • You’re bored and just want to try something different for an hour (use perk resets for this, not attribute resets)

Before you reset:

  • Make a manual save (seriously, do this)
  • Plan your new build – the official Build Planner tool on CD Projekt’s site is actually useful for this
  • Test different perk combinations first since those are free to reset
  • Research what attributes your favorite weapons and playstyles actually need

Mistakes everyone makes (that you shouldn’t)

I’ve watched enough people screw up their builds to know the common traps:

  • Spreading points too thin. You cannot be good at everything. Pick 2-3 attributes maximum and dump your points there. A 20/20/10/5/4 split is way better than going 12/12/12/12/11 trying to do everything.
  • Ignoring perk synergies. Some perks multiply each other’s effectiveness. Reading through the trees before committing makes a huge difference. Random perk grabs might feel good in the moment but they won’t build into anything cohesive.
  • Using the reset too early. Already covered this but it’s worth repeating – wait until you actually know what you’re doing. Level 20 minimum. I know that shiny reset button is tempting at level 8 but resist.
  • Not backing up saves. If you’re using mods or save editors, backup your saves first. Every. Single. Time. I cannot stress this enough.
  • Forgetting cyberware requirements. High-end chrome needs specific attribute levels to even equip. If you’re planning a build around legendary cyberware, make sure you’ve got the attributes to actually use it. Nothing worse than finding perfect gear you can’t equip.

What if you already used your reset and regret it?

You’ve got a few options here, none of them perfect:

  1. Load an earlier save. If you made a manual save before resetting (which you absolutely should have), just reload that. You lose whatever progress happened after but at least you get your reset back.
  2. Use mods. Install one of the unlimited reset mods I mentioned earlier. Disables achievements temporarily on PC but who cares if you’re already deep into a modded playthrough.
  3. Console commands. PC players can just bypass the whole system with Cyber Engine Tweaks. Works instantly, no hassle.
  4. Start a new character. Nuclear option but sometimes starting fresh with a clear build plan is honestly better than trying to salvage a mess. Console players without mod access might be stuck with this if they can’t load an earlier save.

Wrapping this up

Resetting stats in Cyberpunk 2077 ranges from super easy (perks) to annoyingly limited (attributes). The official one-time attribute reset works fine if you plan it right and don’t waste it early. Perk resets are basically unlimited so experiment away. PC players have way more flexibility through mods and console commands – and honestly that feels like how the system should’ve worked from the start for a single-player RPG.

My advice? Don’t stress too much about making the “perfect” build during character creation. You’ll figure out what you like after playing for a while, and that’s the right time to use your attribute reset. The game’s way more fun when you’re playing a build you actually enjoy instead of forcing yourself through something that sounded cool on paper or some generic youtube build tutorial but feels terrible in practice.

And remember – if you’re on PC and the one-reset limit drives you crazy, mods exist for a reason. Use them. The game’s better for it.

Your Burning Questions About Resetting Stats in Cyberpunk 2077

Can You Skip Spending Attribute Points at Character Creation and Spend Them Later?

Yeah, you totally can. When you’re staring at those initial 7 attribute points during character creation, just click “Next” without spending them. The game doesn’t care.

Here’s the trick though. Character creator normally caps you at 6 points in any single attribute. But skip spending during creation and you can immediately dump all 7 points into one stat the second you open your character menu. Level 10 in one attribute before you’ve even done your first gig.

Intelligence builds benefit most from this. Having 9-10 Intelligence right out the gate gives you access to quickhacking perks that would normally take hours to unlock. You’re shutting down enemies before you’ve even met Jackie at the noodle stand.

Does Resetting Attributes Affect Your Street Cred or Other Progression Systems?

Nope. Attribute resets only touch your attribute and perk points. Your Street Cred stays put. Same with character level, skill progression, inventory, eddies, cyberware, quest status… all of it remains untouched.

The catch? You’ll need to re-spend points to re-unlock perks that had attribute requirements. Reset your 18 Body down to 3 and all those high-tier Body perks disappear until you meet their requirements again.

Can You Max Out All Attributes in One Playthrough?

Not even close. At level 60 with Phantom Liberty, you get 81 total attribute points. Maxing all five attributes to 20 would require 100 points. You’re 19 points short.

Best case? You max three attributes to 20, leaving you with 21 points to split between the remaining two. Without Phantom Liberty the level cap drops to 50 and you only get 71 attribute points total.

The game forces you to specialize. And honestly that’s better design than letting you be godlike at everything.

If You Load an Old Save, Does Your One-Time Attribute Reset Become Available Again?

Yeah it does. The reset status is tied to your save file, not your account. Load a save from before you clicked that reset button and the option’s back.

Make a manual save right before using your attribute reset. Test your new build, play for a few hours. Hate it? Load that save and you’ve got your reset back.

I’ve done this more times than I care to admit. Built a full netrunner at level 40, realized I hated sitting in shadows waiting for quickhacks to proc, loaded my pre-reset save and went full Body/Reflexes instead.

Is There New Game+ in Cyberpunk 2077, and If So, Does It Give More Attribute Points?

There’s no official New Game+. CD Projekt Red hasn’t added it despite players asking since launch.

What the game does have is the “One More Gig” system. After finishing the main story you get kicked back to before the point of no return. You can keep playing in that same world with your character and gear intact… but you can’t restart the story while keeping your stuff.

PC players have a mod that creates a pseudo-New Game+ experience. Lets you carry over equipment, cyberware and items while restarting the story from scratch.

Console players are out of luck unless CD Projekt Red decides to add proper New Game+ in a future update. And given how long the game’s been out… I wouldn’t hold my breath.
