Best Oblivion Remastered Performance Mods for Stutter-Free Experience

You boot up Oblivion Remastered, ready to lose yourself in Cyrodiil, and then it hits you… the stutter, the frame drops, the general chugging that makes you want to throw your mouse. Unreal Engine 5 is a beast, but it can bring even beefy rigs to their knees. I’ve been tinkering and testing, and this list is the result – a collection of the absolute best Oblivion Remastered performance mods to get your game running smooth as butter.

And if you’re looking for the full overhaul, everything I’ve gathered on mods and guides is being collected over at my main spot for everything Oblivion Remastered.

Ultimate Engine Tweaks

This mod is kinda the nuclear option for fixing stutter. It’s not a simple graphical tweak; it’s a deep-level custom configuration file built from months of testing UE5. If you feel like you’ve tried everything and still get those annoying micro-freezes when turning the camera or entering a new area, this is your first stop.

Ultimate Engine Tweaks FPS comparison showing improved performance.
  • A completely custom Engine.ini file designed for maximum performance.
  • Optimizes how the game uses your CPU, GPU, RAM, and even your SSD.
  • Strips out unnecessary visual noise like film grain and chromatic aberration.
  • Improves how upscaling like DLSS and FSR works, reducing ghosting and shimmering.
  • Comes in two versions: one for Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) monitors and one for standard ones.

Gameplay changes: The difference is night and day. Input latency feels lower, making combat more responsive. The biggest win is the stability. Instead of wild FPS swings, you get a much more consistent and smooth framerate. Some people report gaining anywhere from 15 to a whopping 70 FPS, which is just insane.

Oblivion Optimizer

If Ultimate Engine Tweaks is the sledgehammer, Oblivion Optimizer is the scalpel. This mod focuses specifically on two of the biggest culprits for stutter in Unreal Engine 5: shader compilation and asset streaming. It’s designed to make the game load stuff in the background more intelligently.

Oblivion Optimizer mod's key art with a fiery armored knight.
  • Improves shader handling by pre-loading and caching them, which means less stutter when new effects pop up on screen.
  • Optimizes how textures and models are streamed into the world, leading to smoother exploration.
  • Better management of CPU and GPU resources by enabling more parallel processing.
  • Disables a bunch of useless background logging that eats up resources for no good reason.

Gameplay changes: You’ll notice this most when you’re riding your horse across the map or sprinting through a dense area like the Imperial City. Those moments where the game just freezes for a split second while it loads new assets? They’re pretty much gone. It makes the whole experience feel less janky and more polished.

LUMEN BEGONE – Disable RT for Better Performance

Lumen is Unreal Engine 5’s fancy global illumination and reflections system. It’s also a massive performance hog. And guess what? Even when you turn it “off” in the game’s settings, it’s not really off. This mod fixes that, properly killing it for a huge FPS boost.

  • Completely disables the forced Lumen raytracing system.
  • Great for lower-end PCs or handhelds like the Steam Deck where every frame counts.
  • Can be installed by simply dropping in a pre-made Engine.ini file or by adding two lines to your own.

Gameplay changes: This is pure, unadulterated performance gain. Expect a solid 3-10 FPS increase right away, but the real magic happens when you combine it with other optimization mods. I’ve seen people double their framerate in demanding areas. The only tiny catch is you need to set your global illumination to low to avoid some shadow weirdness, which can make some dungeons a bit darker.

Recommended Oblivion Remastered mods

Optimax – Performance (Stutter FPS Latency Fix)

This mod is made by a former AAA developer, and it shows. Instead of a one-size-fits-all solution, Optimax gives you a whole suite of presets tailored to different hardware capabilities. It’s a comprehensive fix that targets framerate, loading times, and input lag all at once.

Optimax Performance Stutter FPS Latency Fix mod title card.
  • Comes with six distinct presets: Ultra Quality, Quality, Balanced, Performance, Ultra Performance, and a Low Spec Gaming option.
  • Provides VRAM recommendations to help you choose the right texture settings for your GPU.
  • Reduces input latency, which is a massive plus for anyone who values responsive controls.
  • Denoises some of Unreal Engine’s built-in effects for a cleaner image.

Gameplay changes: You get to pick your poison. Want to claw back as much performance as possible on an old rig? The Ultra Performance preset can give you up to an 82% boost. Just want a smoother experience on a high-end PC? The Quality preset offers a 51% uplift without sacrificing much visual fidelity. It’s all about giving you control.

Ultra Plus for Oblivion – Performance and Visuals Remastered

This one is less of a simple tweak and more of a total engine overhaul. Ultra Plus aims for the best of both worlds: better performance and better visuals than the vanilla game. It’s incredibly deep, fixing bugs and adding features the developers didn’t.

  • Fixes numerous graphical bugs related to motion blur, ghosting, and shadows.
  • Improves lighting with configurable Lumen quality and dynamic adjustments.
  • Enhances ray tracing with Ray Reconstruction for NVIDIA cards and better reflections.
  • Comes with its own Ultra Mod Manager (UMM) for easy in-game configuration with the F12 key.

Gameplay changes: It’s a transformative mod. Not only do you get a smoother game with fewer stutters, but it also looks noticeably better. The lighting feels more natural, reflections are cleaner, and a lot of the visual annoyances of vanilla UE5 are just… gone. It’s the kind of mod you install and then can’t imagine playing without.

If you're new to this, my Oblivion Remastered mod installation guide can walk you through installing configuring mods for the game.

How to mod Oblivion Remastered

FPS Boost Optimization Config for Oblivion Remastered

Simple, direct, and effective. This mod isn’t a complex script or an engine overhaul; it’s a finely tuned GameUserSettings.ini file. The creator has gone through and tweaked everything to maximize performance without making the game look like a potato.

FPS Boost Optimization Config title art featuring a minotaur and knight.
  • Focuses on CPU, GPU, RAM, and SSD optimization through config file settings.
  • Disables film grain and chromatic aberration for a clearer picture.
  • Optimizes upscaling technologies like DLSS, FSR, and XeSS.
  • Reduces stuttering, micro-freezes, and input latency.

Gameplay changes: It’s a great plug-and-play solution. You just drop the file in, set it to read-only so the game doesn’t mess with it, and enjoy a much more responsive experience. The “Balanced v2” version is the go-to for most systems and delivers a noticeable improvement in smoothness across the board.

Real FPS Performance Fix

This mod is completely different from the others. It’s not an .ini tweak; it’s a C++ program that you run once. It analyzes your specific hardware specifically your GPU’s VRAM and then generates a brand new, perfectly optimized configuration file tailored just for your system.

Real FPS Performance Fix, showcasing scenery without DLSS ghosting.
  • Native C++ patch that addresses memory allocation and streaming issues at a deeper level.
  • Automatically detects your VRAM to prevent stutter caused by incorrect memory pooling.
  • Fixes DLSS instability and eliminates ghosting artifacts.
  • You can choose to keep Lumen enabled or disable it during the process.
  • Fully compatible with future game updates since it generates a fresh config file.

Gameplay changes: Because it’s custom-built for your rig, the results are incredibly consistent. It eliminates the guesswork. You run the executable, and it just works. The fix for DLSS ghosting is a huge deal, as that’s one of the most common complaints with Unreal Engine 5 games. It’s a very smart, very effective approach to performance tuning.

Leviath’s Performance with Full Spectrum Immersion

Here’s one for the players who value raw responsiveness and audio awareness above all else maybe you play with a high refresh rate monitor or just hate input lag. This Engine.ini preset is aggressively tuned for high framerates on low-to-mid-range hardware, but with a unique focus on immersion.

Leviath's Performance with Full Spectrum Immersion title screen art.
  • Disables nearly all heavy graphical effects: ray tracing, ambient occlusion, volumetric fog, god rays, and tessellation.
  • Preserves raw mouse input and disables acceleration for perfect 1:1 aiming.
  • Enables HRTF binaural audio to maintain 3D spatial sound, so you can still hear exactly where enemies are.
  • Minimizes camera shake, motion blur, and other UI effects that can be distracting.

Gameplay changes: This makes the game feel incredibly snappy and responsive. The visual downgrade is noticeable, sure, but the trade-off is an extremely fluid experience. The focus on binaural audio is a fantastic touch, as many performance configs just gut the sound processing, leaving you with flat audio. With this, you get the FPS of a potato config but the audio awareness of a high-end setup.

Mods Installation Recommendations

Most of these mods involve replacing or editing .ini files found in your Documents folder. A few key things to remember:

  1. Never combine .ini mods blindly. If two mods want to edit Engine.ini, you can’t just use both. You have to choose one or manually merge the changes line by line, which is a massive headache. Read the mod descriptions carefully; they almost always tell you what they’re incompatible with.
  2. Always back up your original files! Before you replace Engine.ini or GameUserSettings.ini, copy the original somewhere safe. If a mod doesn’t work out, you can just paste the old one back in.
  3. Read-Only is your friend. For mods that replace GameUserSettings.ini, you often need to right-click the new file, go to properties, and check the “Read-only” box. This stops the game from overwriting your custom settings every time you launch it.

Most mods target Engine.ini or GameUserSettings.ini in

%UserProfile%\Documents\My Games\Oblivion Remastered\Saved\Config\Windows

for Steam/GOG, or WinGDK for Xbox/Game Pass. For .pak files like Oblivion Optimizer, create

OblivionRemastered\Content\Paks\~mods

and plop them in.

Getting Cyrodiil Running at Peak Performance

There you have it. With these mods, you should be able to iron out the worst of Oblivion Remastered’s performance issues and get a smooth, stable framerate. The best part is the variety of approaches from deep engine overhauls like Ultra Plus to smart, hardware-aware tools like Real FPS Performance Fix. You don’t have to just accept a stuttery mess as the price of playing on PC.

If you think I’ve missed a game-changing performance mod, feel free to contact me. I’m always down to test new stuff and will happily add proven winners to this list. Happy modding.
