Stealth Guide: Mechanics, Builds & Weapons In Cyberpunk 2077

The complete Cyberpunk 2077 stealth guide: weapons and builds

Stealth in Cyberpunk 2077 has become my second-favorite playstyle. Clearing an entire building without anyone knowing you were there? Nothing beats that satisfaction.

This guide covers everything from crouching basics to advanced cyberware optimization, recovery when things go wrong and environmental hacks that put security systems under your control.

How does stealth work in Cyberpunk 2077?

Everything starts with crouching. Press crouch for quieter footsteps, a smaller silhouette and harder detection. Crouching Tiger increases sneaking speed by 20%, but Ninjutsu is where the real fun begins: crouch-sprinting. It changes everything, letting you reposition between takedowns without standing and breaking concealment. I’ve lost count of how often it saved me from detection during an infiltration.

Sneak behind an unsuspecting enemy to get the Grab prompt and begin a stealth takedown.

Movement speed matters more than you think. Update 2.0 made enemies better at detecting movement, so walking or running through hostile areas is asking for trouble. Ninjutsu crouch-sprinting lets you stay both fast and hidden.

Stealth takedowns

Sneak up behind an enemy while crouched to reveal the Grab prompt. Once grabbed, choose a lethal or non-lethal outcome. For stealth purposes, both work equally well.

Before recent patches, skull-marked enemies above your level couldn’t be taken down quietly. They broke free and immediately raised the alarm.

Aerial takedowns: Hidden Dragon

Hidden Dragon originally unlocked at 5 Cool for non-lethal aerial takedowns. After 2.0, simply get onto beams, crates, railings or any elevation and jump onto an enemy’s head or shoulders. The animation triggers automatically without a button press. Enemies must be unaware, and it’s non-lethal only. Dropping from a ceiling like a cyber-ninja feels wonderful.

I constantly do this in multi-level buildings. Climb, wait for a patrol below, jump, grab, move on. Effective and satisfying.

Enemy detection and visibility

Update 2.0 made detection more realistic. Walking or running in hostile areas gets noticed faster. Enemies investigate bullet impacts even without hearing shots. Each Cool level reduces detection speed by 0.5%. Headhunter adds visibility reductions of 10% at levels 4, 15 and 19.

Reducing visibility with cyberware

Stack visibility reductions through upgrades to transform stealth gameplay.

Headhunter progression provides passive bonuses, including 10% lower enemy visibility at level 25.

Headhunter 25 automatically grants 10% visibility reduction. Add crouching bonuses, and you’re harder to spot. Upgrade cyberware at ripperdocs for reduced enemy visibility modifiers on individual slots. Some face items, such as a tactical balaclava, provide up to 7% at Tier 5.

The best part? Systematic cyberware stat rerolling takes this much further, as I’ll explain later. For now, know that stacking these visibility reductions completely changes how aggressively you can approach stealth.

Managing enemy sightlines and cameras

Use Ping to reveal all enemies on a local network and mark them through walls. Cameras are a serious threat: they can detect you and raise alarms even when temporarily disabled. Either destroy them with a suppressed gun or use Camera Control to take over and hack enemies from safety.

Ping reveals enemy locations and patrol routes through walls, making it a stealth essential.

I prefer taking over camera networks. Scout entire buildings, tag enemies and upload lethal hacks through the feed without entering dangerous areas.

Throwing knives changed everything

Update 2.0 made throwing weapons incredibly powerful. Knives are silent, hit heads hard with 200%+ multipliers and return after a short delay. Juggler, at 3 perk points, instantly returns thrown weapons after headshot, critical or poison neutralizations. Good aim effectively gives unlimited silent ranged kills.

Juggler returns thrown knives instantly on kills, providing an endless supply of silent projectiles.

I combine knives and katanas for most stealth runs. Quieter than suppressed pistols, with no ammunition shortage. Landing knife headshots across a room before finishing survivors with a katana is deeply satisfying.

Quickhacks for stealth

Update 2.0 introduced tracing and changed quickhacks entirely. Some reveal you; others don’t. Untraceable options include Ping, Tier 4 Memory Wipe, Sonic Shock and System Collapse. They won’t expose your position.

Traceable hacks such as Contagion and Overheat start Revealing Position even while you’re hidden. Enemies trace your signal back to you.

A working stealth combination:

  1. Upload Tier 4 Memory Wipe first to make subsequent quickhacks untraceable.
  2. Follow with Reboot Optics to blind enemies.
  3. Then Sonic Shock to disable hearing and communications.

This combination knocks out most enemies without skull icons while keeping you completely undetected. It costs plenty of RAM, but heavily guarded areas justify the expense.

How stealth damage multipliers work

Stealth damage applies whenever you’re undetected, even if enemies elsewhere are alerted. Each Cool level adds 10% stealth damage. That multiplier stacks with other damage sources for enormous gains.

Killer Instinct adds 25% damage with suppressed weapons, making it central to stealth builds.

Killer Instinct adds another 25% damage with suppressed weapons while you’re undetected. The Tier 5 XC-10 Cetus provides a 2.50x stealth multiplier and guaranteed critical stealth headshots. Add Deadeye for headshot and weakspot damage, plus Long Shot to remove range falloff, and you’ll one-shot enemies from absurd distances.

I built around stealth damage on my second run. Combat became trivial. Most enemies died before knowing I existed, even cyberpsychos.

Advanced stealth tactics

Distraction and positioning

Distract Enemies works on vending machines, speakers and floodlights to separate guards. Enemy peripheral vision spans about 160 degrees, so approach directly behind rather than from the side. A few degrees off-center can trigger detection.

I use distractions constantly: lure a guard to a machine, eliminate, hide the body, repeat. Methodical but effective.

Leaving combat and returning to stealth

Update 2.0 introduced returning to stealth after detection. If spotted, quickly and quietly eliminate the witness before they raise the alarm. Act fast enough, and you can stay hidden. Alternatively, break sightlines and remain concealed. After a while, enemies stop searching and you can resume covert operations.

Gag Order buys extra seconds to neutralize a witness before the alarm.

Memory Wipe instantly removes tracing and restores stealth. Expensive at 10 RAM for Tier 4 or 32 for Tier 5, with a 120-second cooldown, but reliable when you urgently need to reset combat.

Gag Order delays the alarm for several seconds after you’re spotted, buying time to eliminate the witness or reach cover. I take it in every stealth build because those extra seconds separate staying hidden from a full-scale fight.

Moving enemy bodies

Bodies are your main stealth problem. Find disposal containers, marked with box icons, before acting. Some hold two bodies, others one. Plan takedown order around container availability to avoid alarming patrols.

Hiding a body in a container, a key Cyberpunk 2077 stealth mechanic.
Hide the evidence. Finding body-disposal containers is essential for maintaining stealth.

I learned that the hard way on a Japantown gig. Six enemies down, containers for only four bodies. I left two visible, a patrol found them and the alarm went up. Now I count containers before eliminating anyone.

Recovering after detection

Immediate responses

When stealth breaks, you have a few crucial seconds:

  • Quick elimination: Immediately and silently neutralize the enemy who spotted you before the alarm. The first 1-3 seconds matter because they haven’t fully recognized the threat. I use suppressed headshots or throwing knives for this.
  • Memory Wipe: Tier 4 or 5 removes tracing and can restore stealth during combat. Tier 4+ affects the target’s entire squad. After uploading, enemies leave combat and ignore you for around 13.5 seconds. Expensive, but useful in high-security areas.
  • Break line of sight: Run to cover, move behind walls or containers, crouch and wait. Enemies eventually abandon the search and resume patrols. This works best in complex environments with plenty of cover and vertical space.
  • Emergency camo escape: Emergency Cloaking makes enemies lose sight of you when you activate Optical Camo during combat. Combined with Vanishing Act, crouch-sprinting automatically activates camo.

I’ve used all these methods depending on the situation. Memory Wipe is my choice for indoor “oh, damn” moments. Breaking sightlines works better in open environments with plenty of cover.

Essential stealth cyberware

Optical Camo

Optical Camo is the most important stealth implant. Tier 5 reduces enemy visibility by 90% for 7 seconds. You’re difficult to detect outside combat and to hit during it. Available from the Rancho Coronado ripperdoc in Santo Domingo or Buck’s clinic in Kabuki, Watson.

The Relic perk Emergency Cloaking makes enemies lose sight of you when Optical Camo activates during combat. That provides an escape when stealth breaks. Pair it with Vanishing Act for automatic activation while crouch-sprinting and nearly constant invisibility.

Lynx Paws

Reduces footstep noise by 50% and increases crouched movement speed by 12%. Less flashy than double-jump legs, but ideal when concealment matters more than mobility. Available from Fingers in Japantown or Instant Implants in Kabuki at Tier 4.

I kept double-jump legs on my first stealth character because vertical mobility seemed too useful to surrender. On my second, dedicated stealth playthrough, I switched to Lynx Paws. Honestly, the quieter footsteps made a noticeable difference in tight interiors.

Kiroshi Optics

Basic Kiroshi makes camera detection harder. Higher tiers offer extra scanning and targeting features for marking enemies through walls.

Even basic Kiroshi Optics help stealth by slowing camera detection.

The basic version is enough for pure stealth because camera-detection reduction doesn’t improve with tier.

Silent weapon ranking

The best suppressed pistols

Her Majesty is the top choice. Unique built-in suppressor, perfect accuracy, guaranteed critical headshots with Optical Camo, a 150% headshot multiplier and 100% critical chance when conditions are met. It shines in stealth builds maximizing camo uptime.

Her Majesty, an iconic suppressed Phantom Liberty pistol in Cyberpunk 2077.
Phantom Liberty’s iconic Her Majesty is a top suppressed stealth pistol, especially with Optical Camo.

Other options:

  • Arasaka Tamayura is the best base-game option. A normal Power pistol accepting suppressors, with headshot multipliers above some iconics. A Tier 5 XC-10 Cetus makes it a one-shot machine against most enemies.
  • Death and Taxes fires two-shot bursts with a suppressor. Each trigger pull sends two bullets, like a pocket shotgun. Extremely effective for one-shots without perfect headshots.
  • Pride has 100% critical chance on the first shot at each enemy. Needs a separate suppressor, but that opening crit is devastating. Post-game availability limits practical use.

Suppressed rifles worth using

Overwatch remains the only sniper rifle with a built-in suppressor. A 300% headshot multiplier, 50% armor penetration and faster reloads. Nearby enemies can still notice visible impacts despite suppression. Position carefully and prioritize isolated targets.

Psalm 11:6 offers automatic stealth fire with Thermal damage that can finish enemies without extra shots. Tier 5 has 50 rounds and a 30% Burn chance.

Tier 5 M221 Saratoga offers 15 attacks per second, a 1.4-second reload and suppressor compatibility. Customizable with sights and attachments. Dogtown’s Barghest variant has better stats.

Basic stealth builds for different playstyles

Assassin/ninja build

Focus on Cool and Reflexes. Key perks:

  • Ninjutsu: crouch-sprinting.
  • Vanishing Act: automatically activates Optical Camo while crouch-sprinting.
  • Creeping Death: improves health, stamina and movement after kills during Optical Camo.
  • Scorpion Sting: thrown-weapon headshots and criticals poison targets.
  • Juggler: instantly returns throwing weapons after neutralizations.

A mobile assassin who never stops. Crouch-sprint between targets, automatically activate camo, throw a knife for a silent kill, repeat. Fast, aggressive and great fun.

Ghost netrunner build

Combine Intelligence and Cool for hacking stealth. Use Arasaka MK.5, which blocks tracing during Overclock. Tier 4 Memory Wipe makes subsequent quickhacks untraceable; follow with Reboot Optics and Sonic Shock for quiet knockouts. Shadowrunner reduces tracing after takedowns.

This build lets you clear whole buildings without firing a single shot or throwing a single knife. Pure hacking stealth almost feels like cheating when you do it properly.

Stealth sniper build

Prioritize Cool and Reflexes for distant takedowns. Main components:

  • Overwatch sniper rifle.
  • Focus tree: slows time while aiming, resets on kills.
  • Deep Breath: better weapon control during slowed time.
  • Gag Order: delays the alarm after detection.

Long-range stealth sniping works best in open places such as the Badlands or industrial areas. Find elevation, tag everyone with Ping and eliminate them methodically. The Focus tree is wild: kills reset the slowed-time effect, letting you chain headshots in seemingly endless bullet time.

Cyberware optimization for near-invisibility

Rerolling cyberware stats for 1% visibility

After 2.0, strategic cyberware upgrading can reach 1% or even 0% visibility. Upgrade implants to higher tiers at any ripperdoc. Every upgrade randomizes bonus stats, including “reduced enemy visibility” modifiers ranging from 1.9% to 10.9% per item.

  1. Requires 20 Technical Ability and 50 Engineer.
  2. Upgrade cyberware and check for visibility-reduction bonuses.
  3. Dislike the result? Wait 24 hours or save/reload, then buy and upgrade again.
  4. Aim for 3-10% visibility reduction per implant.

With 21+ slots and systematic upgrades, you can stack 70-100%+ reduction. Add Headhunter 25 for an automatic 20%, crouching bonuses and face gear such as ski or robber masks giving up to 7% at Tier 5.

At 1% visibility, you can walk right under enemies’ noses without detection. At 0%, you’re practically invisible even standing directly in their view. I’ve tested this many times. Honestly, it’s a little broken, but incredibly fun.

Optics upgrades and enemy tracking

Kiroshi variants

Cyberpunk lacks conventional vision cones, but several Kiroshi variants help track enemies:

  • Kiroshi “Clairvoyant” Optics highlight enemies within 19.5 meters at Tier 5 while scanning. Highlights persist 60 seconds afterward, creating passive radar through walls so you can follow patrols without direct sight.
  • Kiroshi “The Oracle” Optics, Tier 4+ from level 30+, combine detections: enemies within 19.5 meters, cameras/turrets within 39, explosives/traps within 29, with 60-second highlights. Costs 10 capacity, substantial, but reveals nearly every threat.
  • Kiroshi “Sentry” Optics highlight cameras and turrets within 39 meters at Tier 5. Less useful late, when netrunner perks provide similar features.

Ping: the better alternative

Ping remains the most reliable way to find enemies and patrol routes. Upload to any networked enemy or device to reveal connected enemies through walls. Highlights last, and it’s untraceable, keeping your position hidden.

After Ping, manually tag each revealed enemy for persistent markers. These remain when you move away, helping plan around patrols. I Ping every infiltration for full situational awareness.

Monowire, katanas and stealth limitations

Vanilla restrictions

Vanilla Cyberpunk 2077 doesn’t support dedicated melee-weapon or arm-cyberware stealth takedowns. You can only perform unarmed grabs from behind, choosing lethal or non-lethal afterward. This initially frustrated me: special katana and Mantis Blade stealth animations seem an obvious feature that should exist.

The high-damage workaround

Enough damage lets you perform “stealth kills” by one-shotting enemies with melee before the alarm. Build around stealth damage, 10% per Cool point, critical chance and headshot damage. Perks such as Deadeye enable a powerful opening strike. It works, but without dedicated animations enemies may shout or partly alert others.

Blue Fang, an iconic Cyberpunk 2077 throwing knife for stealth.
Blue Fang is devastating in stealth: silent ranged one-hit kills and a bonus Stun effect if the first hit fails to finish the enemy.
  • Throwing knives outperform melee. With high stealth skills, headshots one-shot regular enemies. Juggler immediately returns weapons after headshot, critical or poison kills, creating effective silent ranged damage.
  • Mantis Blades can’t perform stealth takedowns. You can build for one-hit kills through leap attacks and finishers, but these are loud and break stealth. Mantis Blades excel at open combat rather than sneaking.
  • Monowire kills silently and passes weapon searches, but lacks dedicated stealth takedowns. Before 2.0 it counted as a blade with blade-perk synergy. Its classification changed afterward, reducing pure-stealth effectiveness.

Stealth Finishers mod

Kvalyr’s Stealth Finishers, updated for 2.0+, adds melee finishers as stealth takedowns, arm-cyberware takedowns with Mantis Blades, Monowire and Gorilla Arms, and either grabs or instant eliminations from stealth. Limitations: melee finishers are louder than unarmed chokes, and front-facing animations often play even from behind.

Do weather, lighting or time affect stealth?

Environmental factors

Cyberpunk 2077 stealth largely ignores environmental conditions. Lighting doesn’t matter: enemies detect you equally in complete darkness and bright sunlight. The game doesn’t calculate realistic light-based detection. You’re as visible in the shadows as under floodlights.

  • Time doesn’t matter. Night gives no advantage. Detection speed, field of view and alertness remain constant. The day/night cycle is aesthetic for stealth.
  • Weather barely matters. Rain lowers overall visibility slightly but doesn’t affect enemy detection. Reports of easier rainy stealth are probably psychological rather than mechanical.
  • Fog and pollution sharply reduce the player’s sight range without weakening enemy detection. Thick fog prevents you seeing enemies until you’re close, while they still detect you at normal distances. It’s actually a stealth disadvantage.
  • Sandstorms, mainly in the Badlands, don’t affect detection. Cosmetic weather without gameplay consequences.

Environmental hacking for stealth

Using cameras

Security cameras are both threats and opportunities. Camera Control lets you take over the network: rotate cameras to scout enemy positions, scan and tag through the feed, switch between connected cameras and upload offensive quickhacks through them.

Advanced players can clear entire buildings with cameras and lethal quickhacks without physically entering. Contagion spreading through groups is especially effective when uploaded safely through a camera. I’ve cleared secret Arasaka facilities this way, staying outside and watching enemies fall to Contagion and Overheat.

Ways to disable cameras:

  • Turn Off quickhack: remotely disables a camera.
  • Suppressed shot: permanently destroys it.
  • Manual shutdown: approach and disable it from beneath.
  • Breach Protocol plus Big Sleep: disables all cameras for 6 minutes.

Using turrets

Take Control lets you operate turrets remotely, manually shooting enemies before entering. Friendly Mode rewrites targeting so turrets consider you an ally and enemies a threat. They automatically attack hostile targets in both combat and stealth.

Hacking a security turret for stealth use in Cyberpunk 2077.
Hack environmental objects such as security turrets to turn defenses against their guards.

Breach Protocol plus Turret Tamer makes networked turrets friendly for 3 minutes. Combine with Big Sleep to take over security completely.

Distraction quickhacks

Distract Enemies makes devices malfunction to attract guards. Works with vending machines, lights, speakers, computers, vehicles, TVs, forklifts, generators, radios, screens, smoke machines, reflectors and fuse boxes. Low RAM cost makes it accessible early.

Lure guards from groups for isolated takedowns. Stand near a disposal container, distract an enemy toward it, eliminate, hide the body, repeat.

The optimal stealth-hacking sequence

  1. Find an access point or camera outside enemy attention.
  2. Breach Protocol: upload ICEpick, Big Sleep/Camera Shutdown and Mass Vulnerability.
  3. Ping: reveal every networked enemy.
  4. Take Control: scout cameras and tag everyone.
  5. Enable Friendly Mode on available turrets.
  6. Optionally eliminate enemies with Contagion/Overheat through cameras before entering.
  7. Enter physically with full awareness, disabled cameras and friendly turrets.

This turns stealth from hiding reactively into controlling the battlefield before entry. Master the sequence, and most infiltrations become trivial: you’ve won before stepping inside.

Night City’s invisible predator

Cyberpunk 2077 stealth rewards patience, planning and understanding how systems interact. The post-2.0 overhaul fixed most launch detection problems, added meaningful recovery when stealth breaks and streamlined perks so you aren’t spending points on tiny bonuses. Returning to stealth after detection also fundamentally changes how aggressively you can play.

Stealth builds scale extremely well into late-game content. Combat builds eventually reach damage and defense ceilings, while stealth keeps improving through cyberware optimization, better weapon mods and perk synergy.

Still have questions?

Why am I detected immediately when hacking or using the environment, even with maxed stealth?

Combat hacks such as Synapse Burnout cause instant combat detection even while hidden. Friendly turrets attacking also trigger alarms regardless of position. Start with untraceable options such as Memory Wipe or Sonic Shock. Avoid aggressive hacks until you’re ready to fight.

Can I play pure stealth without a cyberdeck?

Yes: suppressed pistols, knives, Optical Camo, distractions such as recon grenades and careful movement. Avoid approaches needing active hacks. Rely on stealth perks and quiet cyberware such as Lynx Paws.

Why do enemies detect me through solid walls or implausible sightlines?

AI detection sometimes uses sudden-detection mechanics that reveal you through walls after particular combat triggers, such as nearby kills or hacking disturbances. Breaking line of sight and using the stealth-recovery methods covered here is critically important.

Does stealth take too long?

Stealth slows mission pacing and can feel tiring because of long infiltrations, moving enemies into position and hiding bodies. It offers tactical advantages and avoids open combat, but no exclusive mission rewards except in stealth-specific jobs. For most players, it’s a preference rather than a necessity.
