We need to talk about the animals in Kenshi. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy watching my bonedog tear through a pack of hungry bandits as much as anyone. But after 200 hours of seeing the same garru, Beak Things and occasional goats wandering through this post-apocalyptic mess, you start wanting something more.
This collection covers the animal mods that turn Kenshi into the varied, dangerous menagerie it ought to be.
Animal Backpacks
You know what has always bothered me about bonedogs? These creatures can apparently survive in a world where humans can barely scrape by, yet they cannot carry a simple backpack? That makes no sense.

This mod fixes that omission by giving backpacks to almost every creature in the game. Suddenly, your trusty bonedog is more than muscle: it is a walking storage unit.
- Backpacks for all major types of animals.
- Compatible with most other animal mods.
- Clean integration with existing inventory systems.
- No impact on performance.
✅ Gameplay changes: Your animal companions become much more useful for trading expeditions and long journeys. No more leaving behind valuable loot because your beasts of burden can't actually pack anything.
Animal Variety
Thirteen new subspecies might not sound like much until you see how they change exploration. Instead of seeing the same bonedog everywhere, you encounter different breeds with their own looks and stats.

- 13 new subspecies of animals.
- Lore-friendly appearances.
- New passive wildlife for atmosphere.
- Integration with the existing pet system.
✅ Gameplay changes: Exploring becomes more rewarding as you discover new types of animals. The world feels less monotonous, and you'll actually want to search different regions to find specific animal breeds.
Animals, Animals, All Kinds of Animals
This mod adds six new animal races and gives the Cage Beast a chance to stretch its legs outside of the game's archives. We'll finally get to see what these mysterious creatures really do when they're not locked in cages.

- 6 completely new animal races.
- Cage Beasts roaming the world.
- New exotic traders selling rare animals.
- A complete life cycle for raptors.
✅ Gameplay changes: The Great Desert becomes much more interesting to explore, while friendly Cage Beasts as temporary companions add a new dynamic to desert travel.
Wildlife Diversity — Standalone
Sometimes you don't need completely new creatures, you just want the existing ones to look more interesting. This mod focuses on visual variety while adding practical featureslike animal feeders and bags.

- New textures for existing animals.
- Alpha variants with improved characteristics.
- Animal feeding systems.
- Specialized storage bags for animals.
✅ Gameplay Changes: Combat encounters become more varied as alpha creatures provide different levels of difficulty. The feeding system adds a management aspect to the animal companions.
TameBeasties
This mod lets you recruit beasts after capturing them. By beasts, I mean practically anything that moves: Beak Things, spiders, crabs, even those terrifying Skin Bandits. Technically they are humanoids, but you get the idea.

Taming uses Kenshi's existing cage mechanics. Capture a creature, keep it fed and content, and it may eventually decide you are worth following. It is neither easy nor guaranteed, which is how it should be.
- Tame most of the wild creatures in the game.
- Uses existing capture mechanics.
- Requires proper care and feeding.
- Compatible with most animal expansion mods.
✅ Gameplay changes: This completely changes how you deal with hostile wildlife. That pack of Beak Things is more than a threat now: it is a potential source of recruits.
Cattle Mod (Breeding Cows & Bulls)
Finally, someone tackled the obvious question: in a world short on food, why is nobody breeding livestock? This mod adds a full bull breeding system, including milk production and leather crafting.

The economic impact is huge. Instead of relying on hunting or buying meat from traders, you can create sustainable food production. Plus, fresh milk and quality leather give you valuable goods to trade with.
- Breeding mechanics for pack bulls and wild bulls , as well as cows.
- Milk production systems.
- Improved leather crafting.
- Features that support a self-sufficient economy.
✅ Gameplay Changes: Adds a completely new economic path focused on livestock farming. Ideal for players who want to build agricultural settlements rather than just raid bases.
The Cat Mod — An Animal Companion Mod
Cats. In Kenshi. This shouldn't work, but for some reason it works absolutely perfectly. Cats of many colors are purchased as pets, and they come with new options for starting the game.

There's something both hilarious and strangely appropriate about having a pet cat surviving in the same world where giant robots hunt people for sport. These aren't just cosmetic additions, they have their own AI behavior and interact with the world accordingly.
- Many breeds and colors of cats.
- Available as purchasable pets.
- New character starting options.
- Cat-specific behavior and animations.
✅ Gameplay changes: A lighter, domestic touch for base management. Cats provide companionship without the focus on combat found in other animal mods.
Swamp Frogs
Based on concept art that never made it into the base game, this mod adds amphibious pets that can actually survive in water. Ideal if you spend time in the swamps.

The concept art origins make them look like they belong in the world of Kenshi. These are not cute fantasy frogs, these are mutated amphibiansthat have adapted to survive in polluted swamps.
- Mechanics of amphibious creatures.
- Based on official concept art.
- Recruitable and tradeable creatures.
- Unique integration into wetland habitat.
✅ Gameplay Changes: Provides specialized companions for exploring swamps. Their amphibious nature makes them valuable in regions with plenty of water where other animals struggle.
More Dogs
Thirteen new dog breeds with their own traders who visit your base. Because, apparently, one type of faithful canine companion was not enough (and, frankly, the authors of the mod are right).

Each breed has its own distinctive characteristics, from fighting abilities to appearance. The merchant system means you don't have to hunt down specific breeds, they will come to you if your base is developed enough.
- 13 different dog breeds.
- Traveling traders selling specific breeds.
- Breed-specific characteristics and abilities.
- Traders visit your base.
✅ Gameplay Changes: Greatly expands companion options while adding a new type of merchant. Your base becomes more active thanks to visits from dog dealers.
Fantastic Beasts
This mod makes almost every animal available for purchase from tradersincluding rare and legendary variants that you would otherwise never see. It's like having access to a post-apocalyptic pet store.

Unique creatures with special abilities and appearance that make them feel truly special.
- All animals are available through traders.
- Rare and legendary variants of creatures.
- Unique abilities for special creatures.
- Advanced merchant inventory systems.
✅ Gameplay changes: Eliminates the frustration of randomness when searching for specific animals. If you want something, you can buy it, provided you have enough Cats.
Add More Animals – Bigger and Louder
Fifteen new dangerous and unique creatures, including hell hounds and iron crabs. The name says it all, these are not friendly pets. They are apex predators created to make the world more terrifying.

Iron crabs are especially nasty. Imagine crabs with metal shells that can ignore most weaponswhile their claws cut through armor like paper. They completely change the way you approach combat in certain areas.
- 15 new types of hostile creatures.
- Unique abilities and resistances.
- Zone-specific spawn patterns.
- Increased threat diversity.
✅ Gameplay changes: Makes exploration significantly more dangerous and unpredictable. Areas that once seemed safe may now harbor new threats.
Waste Fiends
Mist and Bone Fiends, which can be tamed and equipped with backpacks. These creatures look like they crawled straight out of Kenshi's worst nightmareswhich means they fit perfectly.

Being able to tame these horrors introduces a tempting balance of risk and reward. They are extremely dangerous to capture, but having one as a companion sends a clear message to anyone thinking of messing with you.
- Hostile Mist and Bone fiends.
- Tamable through existing mechanics.
- Backpack compatible.
- The appearance is like something out of a nightmare.
✅ Gameplay changes: Extremely dangerous creatures that can become powerful allies. Taming them offers high risks and high rewards.
Striding Steeds – Horse Mod
Rideable horses with saddles, armor, training and a complete horse-trading economy. Yes, you can finally ride horses in Kenshi, and it changes the game as much as you would expect.

- Fully functional riding system.
- Saddles, armor and equipment.
- Mechanics of horse training.
- A complete horse-trading economy.
✅ Gameplay changes: Travel and combat are completely changed. Mounted combat opens up entirely new tactical possibilities, and increased travel speed changes the way you explore.
More Animal Colors
The color variations here are more extensive than in Diverse Fauna, offering more varied palettes while maintaining realism. Earthy tones, faded colors and weathered looks that tell stories of where these animals have been.

- Extensive system of color variations.
- Fully compatible with backpack mods.
- Realistic color palettes.
- Increased uniqueness of animals.
✅ Gameplay changes: Purely visual improvement. However, a wider range of colors makes individual animals more memorable and distinctive.
Radiant New Animal Subspecies
Each new subspecies has its own backstory implied by the visual design. Scarred animals that have clearly survived harsh conditions, sleek subspecies adapted for speed, and massive breeds built for combat.

- Hand painted textures.
- New subspecies of animals.
- Professional artistic quality.
- Lore-friendly design.
✅ Gameplay Changes: Visual improvements with subtle stat variations between subspecies. The quality of hand painting greatly enhances the visual appeal.
Creating Diverse Fauna in Kenshi
Before adding modifications to the game, I advise you to read how to install mods – this will save a lot of time fixing errors.
What strikes me most about these mods is how they complement Kenshi's core philosophy rather than contradict it. The world is becoming more dangerous, not safer.
If you have found something I should have included, and it really improves Kenshi, tell me. I am always happy to test it. The important thing is that it does not wreck the balance of the whole mod setup.
