12 Kenshi Overhaul Mods 🎮 2026

Kenshi overhaul mods: total conversions and new gameplay

Kenshi feels more like a simulation of a hostile sandbox world than a conventional game: a canvas of sand, blood, and rust waiting for a story. Overhaul mods explore its potential, each following its own philosophy.

A roundup of the most significant big mods for Kenshi, from community titans to dedicated projects, for players who want more than just a facelift.

Universal Wasteland Expansion (UWE)

UWE also fights the emptiness of the world, but with a radically different approach. Instead of replacing everything, the mod meticulously expands on existing lore and mechanics. This is a choice for those who love the original Kenshi design, but want to bring the underlying ideas to their logical conclusion.

Universal Wasteland Expansion shows a range of characters from this Kenshi overhaul mod.
  • Lore-friendly expansion: Develops factions, characters and concepts that were only hinted at in dialogue (for example, the quest to find Hamut's wife).
  • Mechanics rework: Theft, stealth and looting have been completely revised – now they are more complex and more logical.
  • Dynamic World: A huge number of new world states and power shifts in cities have been introduced, causing global political shifts after defeating faction leaders.

✅ Gameplay changes: UWE makes the world more dangerous and cohesive. Early survival remains a struggle for longer, rewarding players who pay attention to the world’s stories.

SentientSands

SentientSands tackles lifeless NPCs and repetitive dialogue by connecting a language model directly to Kenshi. Write whatever you want to a character, and their reply reflects their faction, health, surroundings, and your relationship history.

SentientSands mod with AI dialogues for Kenshi.
  • Living World: Each conversation is generated in real time based on Kenshi's lore and the current situation. The AI can recruit characters, start trading, change faction relations, or throw you in prison – it all depends on what you say.
  • Unique names and memory: NPCs receive names from a pool of 5000+ options upon first meeting. Along with the name, a biography and personality are generated that are saved forever. If you meet the same bandit a week later in another city, he will remember the previous conversation.
  • Three communication modes: Talk (normal volume, others eavesdrop), Whisper (private one-on-one dialogue), Yell (addressing a crowd, several NPCs answer at the same time).
  • Background conversations: NPCs communicate with each other without your participation. They react to fights nearby, hunger, weather, biome. Conversations are ongoing – the world is no longer frozen in silence.
  • Rumor system: The mod tracks battles, kills, healings, raids, and city captures. These events are periodically synthesized into rumors and spread among NPCs. If you go into a tavern, the bartender may mention your attack on Squin three days ago.
  • Negotiation: bargain through dialogue and try persuading NPCs to join you. Members of major factions such as the Holy Nation and United Cities refuse unless you have a strong reputation or have saved their lives.
  • New menu (F8): change the AI model in-game, browse the entire campaign dialogue history, and track rumors.

⚠️ Requirements: RE_Kenshi, KenshiLib, API key for the language model (Player2, OpenRouter, Ollama, LM Studio).

Supported languages: English, French, Spanish, Japanese.

Installation:

  1. Download and install RE_Kenshi to the root of Kenshi, run the installer
  2. Extract KenshiLib to the root of the game
  3. Subscribe to the mod in the Workshop (or copy it to \Kenshi\mods\)
  4. Open \server\config\providers.json, add API keys or local server URL
  5. Configure models in models.json
  6. Launch the game only through RE_Kenshi.exe, enable the mod in the launcher

✅ How gameplay changes: SentientSands takes dialogue in Kenshi to the next level. Diplomacy, trade and recruiting now depend on what you say and how you formulate your arguments. Every non-player character remembers your actions, discusses them with others, and spreads rumors. Essentially, now you interact with hundreds of unique characters, each with their own story and attitude towards you.

Reactive World

This mod combats the static nature of Kenshi, where major events often only happen if the player personally intervenes. Reactive World makes the world truly alive by creating a web of consequences for your actions and conflicts between NPCs.

  • Dynamic Faction Wars: Cities and outposts can change hands if key characters are killed or imprisoned, causing a chain reaction across the map.
  • New world states: Scenarios have been added where, for example, Anti-Slavers seize the territories of the United Cities, or Flotsam Ninjas lay claim to the cities of the Holy Nation.
  • Living World: Factions react to changes in power much more logically, creating new opportunities and threats that develop even without your direct participation.

✅ Gameplay changes: Your actions take on weight. Removing a faction leader doesn't just remove him from the board – it creates a power vacuum that others immediately begin to squabble over, making Kenshi's politics unpredictable and interesting.

Kenshi Kaizo

Kaizo is not for beginners. It solves a problem only veterans know: predictability. The mod is designed to bring back the feeling of danger and uncertainty, making the world more reactive, smart and hostile.

Global mod Kenshi Kaizo, a wanderer and a sheep cross the desert under two large moons.
  • Smarter AI: NPCs behave more realistically. Bandits kidnap unconscious characters, gate guards rescue their own people, and factions react more sensibly.
  • Livelier dialogue: new interactive conversations can lead to diplomacy, fights, or recruitment.
  • Evolving World: The states of the world can change independently of you, creating the feeling of a living universe where conflicts develop organically.

✅ Gameplay changes: Kaizo makes you paranoid. Old strategies may no longer work because enemies have become more cunning and the world has become less forgiving. We have to adapt, and every journey becomes risky again.

P.S. Be careful, the mod hasn't been updated for a long time.

A Forgotten World (AFW)

A Forgotten World targets a weak point in vanilla Kenshi: a lack of interesting endgame goals. This ambitious project adds plenty of content for life after Cat-Lon, including new research, formidable bosses, and advanced building options.

A Forgotten World features a colossal insect-like creature fighting small figures.
  • Endgame Content: Powerful new bosses and factions designed specifically to challenge seasoned veteran squads.
  • Advanced Research: Over 100 new technologies, including Level 5 walls and automated mines.
  • Base and economy: More than 150 new buildings. The NPC economy has been improved – merchants have more money and a wider range of products.

✅ Gameplay changes: AFW gives you purpose in the late game by presenting you with specific challenges and obstacles when it seems like the vanilla world has already been conquered.

Project Kathun — Clone Wars Era Conversion

For those who want to escape the world of Kenshi completely. Project Kathun is a complete conversion to Star Wars. The brutal Kenshi engine is used as the foundation for a deep sandbox RPG in the Star Wars universe.

Project Kathun Clone Wars Era Conversion, featuring clone troopers and battle droids.
  • Full conversion: The world, lore and factions of Kenshi have been replaced with a Star Wars theme. The United Cities became the Galactic Empire, the Anti-Slavers became the Rebels, and so on.
  • Star Wars mechanics: Lightsabers, blasters, the Force (through new animations) and iconic races like Twi'leks and Wookiees.
  • New Quests: The Clone Wars Era variant adds even more content, including Jedi and Sith quests.

✅ Gameplay changes: A completely different fantasy. The core "survive and progress" loop remains, but now it's wrapped in the familiar sounds of blasters and the whir of lightsabers.

Kenshi: Genesis

This mod solves the main problem of the world of Kenshi: it is huge, but in some places it seems empty and unfinished. Genesis is the community's attempt to create "Kenshi 1.5" by filling in the gaps with content, structure, and life. This mod is for those who want more of everything in the base game.

A screenshot from Kenshi Genesis showing a large city with wind turbines built into the side of a mountain.
  • World Rebuild: Almost every city and settlement has been rebuilt from the ground up, giving it unique architecture and a more logical layout.
  • Massive content infusion: Hundreds of new types of armor and weapons, as well as over 5,000 lines of new dialogue.
  • System Expansion: The faction size limit has been increased to 256 and the squad size limit to 50, new factions have been added and more traditional quest chains have been introduced.

✅ Gameplay changes: Genesis turns Kenshi into a content-rich RPG. The denser, more directed world can sacrifice some of the lonely wasteland survival that makes vanilla memorable.

Kodaxmaxs Kenshi Overhaul

This overhaul was created for those who find Kenshi's combat too slow or formulaic. It removes downtime and makes combat more chaotic, challenging, and tactical.

A battle scene from the Kodaxmaxs Kenshi Overhaul mod.
  • More attack slots: The maximum number of simultaneous attacks on a character has been increased from 1 to 5. Now a crowd can really trample a single player.
  • Combat Rebalance: Damage, armor resistance, healing speed and wound system have been reworked to create fast and brutal fights.
  • Weapon specialization: new melee weapons with specific roles, from jittes for knockouts to halberds for crowd control.

✅ Gameplay changes: Combat turns into a crazy tactical puzzle. Numerical superiority is now a real threat, and one super warrior will no longer be able to kill an army by taking on enemies one at a time.

City Architecture Total Overhaul (CATO)

This is a purely visual overhaul that tackles repetitive town architecture. It brings settlements to life without changing gameplay systems or faction politics.

City Architecture Total Overhaul showcases a fortified settlement in Kenshi.
  • City redesign: Almost 100 locations have been redesigned – from capitals to small outposts. The layout has become more realistic and interesting.
  • Lore-friendly: The changes strictly correspond to the vanilla style and history of each location.
  • Compatibility: Made so as not to conflict with mods for gameplay and world states – only buildings and architecture change.

✅ Gameplay changes: Visual changes only. Exploring is more enjoyable and each town develops its own identity, while combat and trading work as before.

Lore Friendly Role Playing Experience

This is not one mod, but rather a philosophy and a ready-made mod collection (mod pack). The goal is to improve the vanilla experience through usability improvements, features, and content that looks like it was always in the game.

Global mod Lore Friendly Role Playing Experience for Kenshi.
  • Handpicked collection: combines dozens of small lore-friendly mods, including animations, UI changes, and fixes.
  • Vanilla Plus: Adds depth and polish without changing the core of the Kenshi design.
  • Balance: Mods are chosen to complement each other, maintaining the atmosphere and complexity of the original.

✅ Gameplay changes: Feels like a more polished, full version of vanilla Kenshi. The changes are small, but they are many, and together they make the game much smoother and more immersive.

Lunar Kenshi Overhaul

This project is a comprehensive rebalance. It touches on almost every aspect of gameplay to make Kenshi feel more cohesive and polished without overwhelming the game with a ton of new content.

Lunar Kenshi Overhaul shows a character and inventory in this Kenshi overhaul.
  • Focus on balance: Neat changes to the combat system, economy, research tree and stats.
  • Minimal additions: new items appear only where vanilla choices are clearly lacking.
  • Polish: the mod is in alpha, aiming to make existing systems work together smoothly.

✅ Gameplay changes: Suitable for those who like vanilla, but are annoyed by obvious holes in the balance and shortcomings. Gameplay becomes more consistent.

Wastetopia 714

A large-scale mega-mod that combines several large projects (including expansion of the map and mechanics of the living world) into one package.

Wastetopia 714 shows a map of Kenshi and a sandy coastline with water.
  • Compilation: Includes mods like NewLands to expand the map and adds its own living world mechanics.
  • Community project: The author involves the community to develop the mod.
  • Modularity: The goal of the project is to split it into modules for flexible configuration in the future.

✅ Gameplay changes: A larger, more dynamic world to explore, although its overall cohesion can vary, as with any mod collection.

Recommendations for using overhaul mods

It is extremely important to install mods on Kenshi correctly. Follow the rules:

  • Start a new game. No options. Trying to load an old save with a global mod is a guaranteed way to kill the save file and break the world. These mods are designed to start from scratch.
  • Load order is everything. Put the overhaul itself at the bottom of your load order so its changes override the others as intended.
  • Don't be greedy with mods. You are not “augmenting” Kenshi, you are playing a new version of the game. Global mods like Genesis work best alone or with a minimum of third-party addons to avoid conflicts. For UWE, look for official compatibility patches.

This list is far from exhaustive. Steam Workshop and Nexus Mods have plenty of ambitious projects. Some can significantly reduce FPS, so make sure you install performance mods.

Ready to see the new world of Kenshi?

Kenshi modding is a monument to the tenacity of the community that has spent years building the foundation of this unique game. The mods on this list offer different paths, from oversaturated Genesis to lore-heavy UWE to hardcore Kaizo. Each one gives a different take on what Kenshi could have been.

If you know a mod I missed that works reliably, write to me. I will test it and add it. I am always looking for options that will not break a mod setup after an hour of play.
