Kenshi Slavery: Escape And Recruitment 🎮 2026

Kenshi’s Slavery System: How to Escape and Capture Slaves

Slavery in Kenshi isn't some background detail you can ignore. It's woven into the very fabric of this sandbox world. I've spent hundreds of hours in the game, been captured, escaped, and even… I confess… accidentally become a slave trader myself.

Understanding this system is vital to survival. Planning a great escape from Rebirth, or just wondering why the slave you bought is acting like a broken NPC? This guide is definitely for you.

How Slavery Works in Kenshi

How Do You Become a Slave?

Slavery is one of Kenshi's harshest mechanics, and almost every beginner will encounter it.

There are usually three ways to become enslaved, and I've tried them all 😊.

  1. Automatic enslavement. This happens when slavers knock you out, whether they're from the Holy Nation, United Cities, or simply Manhunters. They'll put Prisoner Shackles on you before you can say "freedom." The shackles occupy an armor slot and immediately give you Slave status. Your character also gets the Obedient Slave job, meaning they'll work automatically without your involvement.
  2. Voluntary slavery. Sometimes you actually want to become a slave (I know, it sounds strange). Just climb into any cage in a slave shop. You can use this to train certain skills in a safe environment; more on that later.
  3. Capture. A classic: let hostile factions beat you unconscious, and they'll drag you off to their camps.

You can choose the official "The Slaves" start and begin in Rebirth with two characters already enslaved.

What Happens While You're Enslaved?

Being a slave is terrible for your stats. Shackles severely reduce running speed and combat effectiveness. They lower Strength, Athletics, and combat skills while you're wearing them. You'll grow hungrier, but your hunger won't drop below the starving level. Slavers need you working, so they'll feed you the bare minimum.

Shackles occupy an armor slot and immediately apply Slave status, shown as a chain around the character portrait.

Your character becomes an Obedient Slave. They'll move between work sites and labor automatically. Try escaping during working hours? The guards will catch you and beat you senseless. Fun times.

A meme about free training while enslaved in Kenshi.

Here's the interesting part: slavers heal their slaves so they can keep working. That makes slavery surprisingly useful for certain training strategies.

How Do You Remove Shackles and Free Slaves?

Removing Shackles from Your Characters

You'll need Lockpicking to remove shackles properly. Aim for at least a 35% success chance, though higher is better. Strength 21+ also lets you break them, but Lockpicking is much more reliable.

Picking the lock on shackles in Kenshi. The character menu shows options for freeing them.
You need a trained Lockpicking skill to remove shackles.

You must unlock BOTH the cage AND the shackles to get free. Forget either step and you're still trapped.

Tip: train Lockpicking at night by practicing on your own shackles. The guards are less alert at night, letting you build the skill while planning your escape.

How to Free Slaves You've Bought

When you buy slaves from shops, removing their shackles is straightforward. Use Lockpicking or tools. But here's the catch: not every freed slave will join your squad. Some run away immediately; others follow you for a while before deciding.

Purchased slaves have roughly a 30-60% recruitment chance, depending on the circumstances. Characters who originally spawned as slaves are easier to recruit.

IMPORTANT! Slaves with skills above 25 cannot be recruited in vanilla Kenshi without mods. You also can't recruit anyone you previously put in a cage yourself.

Escaping Slavery: A Step-by-Step Strategy

What Skills Do You Need to Escape Successfully?

After plenty of failed attempts, I've identified the essential skills for your journey to freedom:

Stats needed to escape slavery. The character sheet shows the key skills.
Here's what you need to escape: Lockpicking, Stealth, and Athletics.
  • Lockpicking (35+). To open shackles and cages.
  • Stealth (55-60+). So guards don't spot you.
  • Athletics (at least 40). To outrun pursuit.
  • Assassination. To knock guards out quietly.
  • Toughness. To survive the beatings you'll inevitably receive.

Training Skills "for Free" as a Slave

Slavery gives you free training in Stealth, Lockpicking, and Toughness. Your masters will heal you, so your progress can continue. It's an ideal controlled environment for training dangerous skills without too many consequences. Nighttime is your friend. While the guards sleep, you can:

  1. Practice Lockpicking on everything available (your shackles, cages, other prisoners' equipment).
  2. Train Stealth by sneaking around the camp.
  3. Steal food to avoid starving.
  4. Train Assassination on sleeping slaves or guards.
  5. Build Athletics by circling the camp in sneak mode.

The Escape Itself

Try to leave at night.

Follow these steps:

  1. Pick the lock on your shackles
  2. Unlock the cage
  3. Take a guard's equipment if possible
  4. Free other slaves to cause chaos
  5. Run for the nearest exit while everyone is panicking.

The mass breakout tactic. This is genuinely brilliant. Free a crowd of slaves at once to distract the guards. While they're chasing everyone else, you have a better chance of slipping through unnoticed.

What to Do About Escaped Slave Status

Escaping doesn't make you free immediately. The game has a progression system that feels fairly realistic:

Escaped Slave status in Kenshi. The interface shows the time remaining.
Freedom doesn't come immediately. Kenshi has an Escaped Slave status with a chance of recognition.
  • Escaped Slave status. Lasts 8 hours, with a recognition chance of at least 10%.
  • Ex-Slave status. Lasts 96 hours (4 full days), with a 1-5% recognition chance.
  • Complete freedom. Once all the timers have expired.

During these periods, any slave-trading faction can capture you again if they recognize you. Different factions have their own checks and reactions. My advice: hide in the wilderness and stay out of towns until you're in the clear.

Why Won't Slaves Follow You or Join Your Squad?

You bought a slave, removed the shackles, and they… just stand there like a broken robot. Here are the usual problems:

  • Stuck in a cage loop. The NPC endlessly enters and leaves an open cage.
  • Standing still. Freed slaves stand there like statues.
  • AI conflict. The slave receives conflicting commands from the game's systems.

What can you do?

  1. Save and reload. That fixes AI glitches in about 70% of cases: classic Kenshi.
  2. Try the shackles again. If you're using mods, try removing and re-equipping them.
  3. Wait a little. Some characters need time to decide to escape, so don't panic too early.
  4. Move farther away from the slave shop. Sometimes scripts get stuck while you're standing right in the shop under the guards' noses.
  5. Pick them up and carry them. If a slave is standing like a statue, pick them up and take them away from the camp. At a distance, their survival instinct usually wakes up and normal escape behavior kicks in 🙂

If nothing helps, it is probably a serious bug, and you will need to import your save as a last resort.

The Permanent Slave Status Problem

Sometimes a character stays marked as a slave even without shackles. Here's what to do:

  • Wait. These effects have their own durations.
  • Let the guards see you. The Escaped Slave timer needs to start properly.
  • Import the game. A last resort for resetting character statuses.

Disappearing shackles. If they vanished during Lockpicking but the status remains, it's usually a visual bug. The timer is still running, so be patient.

Slavery Mods for Kenshi

Vanilla slavery is fairly limited if you want to become a slave owner yourself (morally questionable, but it's a game). Here are some worthwhile mods:

  • Players Slavery. A complete slave management system with commands and rings.
  • Kodaxmax’s Slavery Overhaul. Improved mechanics and balance.
  • More Secure Shackles. Makes escaping a real challenge.
  • Universal Wasteland Expansion. Lots of slave-related content.
  • Profitable Slavery. Raises sale prices to 1500-2500 Cats.

The Best Escape Routes and Safe Towns for Former Slaves

Once you've finally broken free, you'll need somewhere to lie low. Here are the best options:

  • Flotsam Safehouse: north of Rebirth, designed specifically for escaped slaves.
  • The Hub: a neutral location in the Border Zone where you can hire mercenaries for protection.
  • World's End: a Tech Hunter town that welcomes even Skeletons.

Escape strategy. Head north to the ninjas or south to neutral settlements. Above all, avoid Holy Nation and United Cities territory while the timers are active. They'll lock you up again before you can blink.

How Different Factions Treat Slaves

Not all masters are the same, and understanding the differences can save your life.

The Holy Nation

For these people, slavery is religious purification and punishment. They mostly enslave nonhumans. Conditions are supposedly a little better because they focus on faith rather than simply working you to death. You'll most likely end up in the quarries of Rebirth.

The United Cities

Here it's pure business. They'll enslave you simply for being poor. Poverty is literally illegal. Conditions are harsh, and they have huge camp networks throughout the Great Desert.

The Slave Traders

Independent dealers who don't care who they sell. They have their own markets and don't discriminate. Equal-opportunity slavery.

The key difference. The Holy Nation sees slavery as punishment with a chance of redemption; the United Cities and slave traders see only cold calculation and exploitation.

Making Money Through Slavery and Slave Trading

Trading in people can bring in money, but it isn't a gold mine.

Here's the breakdown:

  • Vanilla prices. 400-800 Cats per slave.
  • With mods. 1500-2500 Cats.
  • Limits. You're constrained by the number of prisoners and how much you can carry.

The problem is that slave trading is usually less profitable than mining copper or bounty hunting. But selling enemies to slavers raises your faction reputation. If you want to role-play a slave trader, the mods above make it profitable.

Advanced Slave-Freeing Tactics for Committed Abolitionists

Want to take the full abolitionist route? Here are a couple of tips:

Faction warfare. Systematically remove faction leaders to dismantle their networks. Killing nobles causes farmers to take over towns , ending slavery there.

Economic sabotage. Strike at the Traders Guild. Destroy caravans and the economic foundations of factions that depend on slave labor.

Mass recruitment. Free large groups of slaves simultaneously to build an army against the system.

FAQ: Everything Else About Slaves in Kenshi

Can you free slaves in Kenshi?

Yes, of course. You can do it in three ways. First, pick the lock on the character's shackles (aim for at least a 35% success chance to be reasonably confident). Second, buy the poor soul from a shop for 400-2000 Cats. Third, storm camps and release everyone from their cages. Remember: to truly free a slave, you must unlock the cage and remove the shackles. Leave the shackles on and they'll quickly be caught again. Recruitment chances are around 20-60%, depending on the method you choose.

Can you end slavery in Kenshi permanently?

Yes, but it's a task for the truly obsessive. You'll need to kill or imprison key leaders, such as Emperor Tengu and the top figures in the Traders Guild. Without their leaders, United Cities towns decline and are taken over by Rebel Farmers or tinheads. The same goes for camps: kill the Slave Master, and the camp turns into ruins the next time you enter the area.

How do you befriend the Anti-Slavers?

Start by becoming an enemy of all slave traders. The easiest way is to become enslaved and escape, gaining Escaped Slave status. You can also attack slave caravans. Regularly freeing slaves raises your reputation with Tinfist's faction. Once your reputation with slave owners is bad, go to Spring (in the southeastern mountains) or look for them in Admag. Find Tinfist and tell him you want to burn camps with them.

How do you start playing as a slave?

There are three options. The first and most straightforward is choosing "The Slaves" in the main menu. You'll start in Rebirth with empty pockets and shackles on. Second, go to a slave shop and climb into an empty cage. They'll process you immediately. Third, let any slaver patrol in the Great Desert beat you up. They'll collect your unconscious body and put you in shackles themselves.

Will freed slaves join my squad?

Not always. It's a lottery. Purchased slaves have roughly a 30-60% chance. For those you rescue from camps, it's lower, around 20-30%. There's an important rule: if a slave's stats are above 25, they won't join you in vanilla. They're apparently too good to serve anyone else. You also can't recruit anyone you previously put in a cage yourself. The game remembers.

How does hunger work for slaves?

You won't starve to death while enslaved. The game keeps your hunger level at around 100-115. They'll feed you the cheapest food block so you can keep hauling stone. You'll look like a skeleton and have a Strength debuff, but you'll stay alive. Once you escape, the free ride ends, and your hunger bar immediately starts dropping under the normal rules.

Where should you hide after escaping?

Head to the Flotsam Ninja safehouse if you escaped from Rebirth. It's to the north in the Hidden Forest and exists specifically for situations like this. They'll give you food and clothing. The Hub, in the middle of the map, is another good option: there are plenty of neutral people to blend in with. If you're in the east, head to World's End. Above all, avoid major United Cities and Holy Nation towns while Escaped Slave status is active.

Can you own and control slaves yourself?

In the base game, no. Vanilla Kenshi doesn't really support long-term slave ownership. You can only capture people and sell them to shops for 400-1500 Cats. You can't control their work or force them to labor at your base. That requires mods such as Players Slavery. It lets you put rings on prisoners and assign tasks through the jobs menu, just like ordinary characters.

Which slavery mods should you install?

There are plenty. I recommend Kodaxmax’s Slavery Overhaul, which adds depth to the system. If you want a harsher experience, install More Secure Shackles: escaping becomes genuinely difficult. For money-making there's Profitable Slavery, which gives you decent money per slave rather than pennies. If you want large-scale world changes, install Universal Wasteland Expansion; it has plenty of new content involving slaves and the slave trade.

What happens to slaves after escape, and how does the game handle them?

After escaping, you go through a series of statuses. Escaped Slave lasts 8 in-game hours with a 10% recognition chance. Then it changes to Ex-Slave, which lasts 96 hours (4 full days), with a 1-5% recognition chance. During those periods, any slave-trading faction can capture you again if they recognize you. Only when the timer has fully expired are you completely free.

Why do slaves behave like broken NPCs?

It's usually an AI bug, such as the cage loop (when a slave keeps entering and leaving it) or simply freezing in place. There are solutions: a save and reload helps in most cases. Also try picking them up and carrying them farther from the camp. Often the AI only wakes up at a certain distance from the place of captivity. If they're standing like a statue, carry them out and run a couple of hundred meters.

Is slave trading profitable?

Honestly, not very. Early on, one slave brings in 400-800 Cats. That's pennies compared with what you can earn through theft or bounty hunting. Slave trading is mainly for role-playing or quickly improving relations with the Slavers. If you want to get rich from it, install economy mods; otherwise, limited capacity and the difficulty of capturing people make it a waste of time.
