Let's talk about the familiar crash to desktop. You're driving through Night City with synth-rock playing, then suddenly… boom. Desktop. We've all been there. Cyberpunk 2077 crashes can turn a great session into pure frustration, but most cases can be fixed.
We'll check your system, adjust in-game settings and cover useful mods for persistent Cyberpunk crashes. Visit my main Cyberpunk 2077 hub too. Now let's get things fixed.
First steps toward a stable game
Before touching the mod folder, get your system in order. Cyberpunk 2077 is extremely sensitive to hardware and software conflicts. These basic steps solve more than half the problems people ask about.
Updating GPU drivers correctly
Outdated or damaged drivers are the number one cause of instability. Just installing new ones on top of the old ones is not enough.

- Download the tools: Get the latest stable driver from NVIDIA or AMD, plus Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU).
- Clean the system: Restart in Windows Safe Mode, run DDU and remove the existing graphics drivers completely. This clears leftovers that can cause conflicts.
- Perform a clean installation: Reboot to normal Windows mode and install the downloaded driver. Always select the Clean Installation option in the installer, if available.
- Warning: The newest driver isn't always the best. If crashes appear after updating, especially with features such as DLSS Frame Generation, use DDU again and roll back to the previous stable version.
Hardware settings: taming your GPU
Even with perfect drivers, some hardware settings can cause conflicts.
Disable overclocking: I know every frame matters. But Cyberpunk 2077 does not tolerate GPU overclocking or undervolting. Even a mild overclock that's stable elsewhere can cause random crashes here. Use MSI Afterburner, BIOS or other software to restore factory settings.

Set high performance mode in Windows: You need to make sure that Windows gives the game maximum power.
- Search Windows for Graphics settings and open it.
- Under Graphics performance preference, click Browse.
- Go to the Cyberpunk 2077 installation folder and add Cyberpunk2077.exe.
- Select the added game, click Options and choose High performance.

Here's where cyberpunk2077.exe sits on my drive: D:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Cyberpunk 2077\bin\x64.
In-game settings: how to make Cyberpunk more stable
The graphics menu is a minefield of potential crash causes. Let's defuse them.
Disabling problematic visual effects
These effects look good but are known sources of instability, especially on weaker hardware.

- Ray tracing and path tracing: Disable these first. Driving quickly through crowded districts such as Jig-Jig Street with ray tracing enabled is a classic crash scenario.
- DLSS Ray Reconstruction: Disable this toggle on RTX cards. It's been a known source of crashes for many players since its introduction.
- Frame Generation: If the game crashes immediately after launch, turn this off. Once stable, try enabling it again.
How to turn off overlays (especially Steam)
Overlays hook into the game and consume resources, often causing conflicts. Disable all of them.

Steam overlay is a frequent culprit. To disable it, you need to do the following:
- Open the Steam library.
- Right-click on Cyberpunk 2077 and select Properties.
- Under General, uncheck Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game.
Don't stop at Steam. Turn off absolutely all running overlays. This includes Discord, NVIDIA GeForce Experience, MSI Afterburner, and more. If the program overlays the interface on top of the game, turn it off.

How to Increase FPS in Cyberpunk 2077
Setting up the operating system and cleaning the game files
Sometimes the problem isn’t with the game itself, but with corrupted files or Windows settings.
Cleaning corrupted game files
A full cleanup can work wonders. It resets your settings but won't delete saves.

- Delete the local cache: Press Windows+R, enter %userprofile%\AppData\Local\CD Projekt Red\ and press Enter. Delete the Cyberpunk 2077 folder there.
- Delete the game cache: Open the installation directory, such as Steam\steamapps\common\Cyberpunk 2077, then delete cache inside r6.
- Verify game files: Open Steam or GOG, right-click the game, open Properties, find Installed Files and select Verify integrity of game files. This redownloads the files you deleted, replacing potentially damaged copies.
Configuring Windows and System Security
A few final checks to make sure Windows isn't interfering.
- Run as administrator: Find Cyberpunk2077.exe and REDprelauncher.exe. Right-click each, open Properties > Compatibility and enable Run this program as an administrator.
- Antivirus exceptions: Open your antivirus and add both of the aforementioned executables to the exclusion list. This will prevent security software from interfering with the game.
- Check Windows files: A useful last resort if nothing else helps. Open an administrator Command Prompt and run sfc /scannow. It scans for corrupted Windows files and attempts repairs.
What if Cyberpunk 2077 crashes when pressing Esc?
Crashing when opening the pause menu usually involves outdated interface mods, a corrupted settings cache or cloud-service conflicts. Try these steps:
- Remove old mods: Delete everything in the game root except the large archive folder, then verify files through your launcher: Steam, GOG or EGS.
- Reset interface settings: Press Win+R, open %LOCALAPPDATA%\CD Projekt Red\Cyberpunk 2077 and delete UserSettings.json.
- Disable overlays: Turn off Steam, Discord and GeForce Experience overlays. They often conflict with menu rendering. Leave them off in games if responsiveness and low latency matter to you.
- Disable cloud saves: Turn off Cross-Platform Saves in the game settings to avoid synchronization freezes.
Fixing crashes to the Windows desktop without an error
A sudden crash usually means Windows forcibly closed the process because of insufficient virtual memory, hardware instability or conflicts with hidden system files. Try the following:
- Increase the paging file: In Windows Advanced System Settings, under Performance, enable automatic paging-file management or manually set at least 16 GB, then restart.
- Remove hidden files: Launcher verification doesn't remove third-party files. Open Cyberpunk 2077\bin\x64 and manually delete third-party libraries such as version.dll or winmm.dll.
- Remove hardware overclocks: The engine is temperamental. Reset GPU overclocking and undervolting as described earlier, and temporarily disable your RAM's XMP profile in BIOS.
Essential mods for avoiding crashes
Once the base game is stable, you can reinforce that result. These mods are important enough that, in my opinion, every Cyberpunk mod setup should include them.
| Mod name | Description and why you need it |
|---|---|
| Cyber Engine Tweaks | A multipurpose mod offering stability patches, FPS improvements and an AMD SMT fix. If you install just one mod, make it this. Always check version compatibility on its page; mismatches can cause startup crashes. |
| Crash Repair | Especially for NVIDIA RTX users, this mod updates the DLSS and DirectX libraries to fix common crashes, especially after official game patches. |
| AMD Ryzen SMT Fix | While CET has this fix, this standalone mod is great for older Ryzen processors (8+ cores) that haven’t been completely patched by CDPR. It can significantly increase the use of the CPU and smooth out the gameplay. |
Troubleshooting mod-related crashes
Installed lots of mods and now the game won't launch? Startup crashes are almost always mod-related.
First, check whether REDmod is causing the problem. Disable it in the launcher. If that doesn't help, find the conflicting mod by elimination.
- Clear the mod cache: Delete the contents of r6/cache/modded in the game directory.
- Turn off half the mods: Move half of the mods from the game folder to the temporary folder on the desktop or disable them in Vortex.
- Test the game: Launch Cyberpunk. If it still crashes, the culprit is among the active mods. If it works, the culprit is in the half you moved to the desktop.
- Repeat: Keep halving the suspect group and testing until one mod remains. That's your culprit.
Remember to update core frameworks such as RED4ext and redscript after every game patch. If you need a fresh start, my Cyberpunk 2077 console command guide can quickly restore your inventory and attributes.

Why does Cyberpunk crash even without mods installed?
This is usually caused by corrupted game files or residual configuration data from a previous installation. Just reinstalling often doesn’t help, as Steam can leave old, broken files behind.
For a truly clean start, uninstall the game manually, then visit steamapps/common/ и %LOCALAPPDATA%\CD Projekt Red and delete the Cyberpunk 2077 folders from both locations. This removes all game and configuration files.
The next installation should then actually be clean. If crashes persist, the GPU driver may be responsible. Try an older stable version recommended by the community.
Back to a stable game
Getting Cyberpunk 2077 running perfectly can feel like a minigame. Complex, beautiful and sometimes fragile software. A methodical approach is the key.
Start with a clean slate – fresh drivers, default settings, no mods – and make sure the game works. Then slowly return your settings and mods one at a time.
Getting a random crash usually means a simple conflict you can fix, rather than a deep, irreparable bug. Once everything is configured, the reward is one of the most stable and visually stunning open worlds. Happy hunting, choom.
Crash questions answered
What does “GPU Crash for Unknown Reasons” mean?
This generic error almost always points to GPU instability. Disable any overclock or undervolt, including factory OC settings: Cyberpunk is sensitive to them. If that fails, roll back to a driver known for stability. You can also enable Debug Mode in NVIDIA Control Panel, which uses reference clock speeds instead of factory overclocks. If problems persist, investigate hardware by testing your RAM or GPU in another system.
Is there a quick settings reset for startup crashes?
Yes. Go to *%LOCALAPPDATA%\CD Projekt Red\Cyberpunk 2077* and delete UserSettings.json. A corrupted file is recreated with defaults at the next launch. Clearing the GPU shader cache, such as NVIDIA or DXCache folders, and adding –launcher-skip to Steam launch options may also fix launcher problems.
Can disabling ray tracing and DLSS stop crashes?
Very likely. Ray tracing, DLSS 3.5 Frame Generation and Ray Reconstruction are major instability sources, especially under heavy load when driving through crowded areas. Disabling them is a main troubleshooting step. Once stable, try DLSS again at a lower preset such as Auto or Performance. If preventing crashes is your priority, leaving ray tracing off is often best.
How do I know which mod is breaking the game?
The most reliable approach is binary elimination. First check that the game works with all mods disabled. Then enable small, logical groups, testing after each. When crashes begin, the culprit is in the last group. Disable half of it and test again. Keep halving until you've isolated the problem mod. Tools such as Archive Conflict Checker can also identify obvious incompatibilities.
Could Windows or BIOS settings be a problem?
Less likely, but possible. Disable RAM's XMP (Extreme Memory Profile) in BIOS: it's technically overclocking and can destabilize sensitive applications. In Windows, disable Discord, Steam, NVIDIA and other overlays, and try disconnecting nonessential USB devices.
