Vanilla Valheim only introduces magic in the Mistlands, leaving you swinging an axe until then. To avoid waiting until late game, I have collected eight mods, from combat staves and summoning totems to a complete class-based RPG system.
MagicPlugin
Normally, your first staff is a long way off. Blacks7ar's MagicPlugin changes the rules: summoning totems, robes, staves and belts appear in the Meadows. Their power grows with progression, and the author adds an entire arsenal, from the Surtling Staff to fire, ice and lightning scepters.

- Three starting staves, Surtling Staff, Eikthyrs Staff and Neck Totem, plus five midgame options including Staff of Healing and Wolf Totem.
- Four wands whose damage grows with your character, and two starting books.
- Three late-game scepters, Flame, Ice and Lightning, with secondary attacks.
- Six armor sets, with one shared between Meadows and Black Forest, plus six magic belts.
- Eitr food uses yellow mushrooms, giving those a purpose.
- An Asksvin mount that headbutts, bites and leaps at enemies. Stamina use depends on Riding skill.
- Configurable casting resource: eitr, stamina or both.
- Manual installation: copy MagicPlugin.dll into BepInEx\plugins. After updating, delete config\MagicPlugin.cfg so the mod loads fresh settings.
✅ How the game changes: magic is available from the Meadows and progresses through each biome. You can put the axe in a chest almost immediately. Wolf Totem, for example, requires 124 eitr, covered by a hearty meal of Mountain Soup, Mountain Stew and Mushroom Pie. Choose this mod to play a pure mage from day one.
MagicRevamp
If abundant early magic feels excessive, consider blacks7ar's other mod. MagicRevamp suits players who prefer familiar progression. Each region gets one staff and wand, and spells load like ammunition.

- Seven staves and seven wands, exactly one pair per biome.
- More than 90 spells loaded into staves as ammunition, with the author promising more.
- A Spell Table with two upgrades for crafting spells and paper from wood.
- Six armor sets and seven new materials.
- A dedicated spell-selection menu, cycled with a key and configurable in color and transparency.
- Requires Smoothbrain's Backpacks plugin. Put MagicRevamp.dll in BepInEx\plugins.
✅ How the game changes: carry one staff instead of five and switch spells with a hotkey. Power increases gradually, as in vanilla, rather than giving a mage every weapon at once. An excellent way to preserve the original balance while playing with magic.
ElPopeAdventures
Vanilla eitr armor awaits deep in the Mistlands. ElPopeAdventures gives you the mage profession in the Meadows. It also includes a rideable deer and reworked inventory, with each of the three features independently disableable.

- Read the Mage Tome to become a mage. Start with 50 mana and gain another 20 per defeated boss.
- Staves unlock by biome: start with Frost Staff in the Meadows, move to the fiery Arcane Staff in the Plains, and receive three at a time in later stages.
- Early robes, before the Plains, improve mana regeneration.
- Berry cocktails restore 40, 70 or 110 mana.
- Tame deer with mushrooms, berries or carrots and use a lox saddle.
- Item stacks are four times larger. K sorts inventory, L quickly deposits loot, and crafting draws from chests within 40 meters.
- Install through r2modman or Thunderstore Mod Manager to fetch BepInExPack automatically. Multiplayer requires the mod and matching configuration on every client and the server.
✅ What changes: only mages see staff recipes, although anyone can wear the robes. Items disappear if a character or chest loads without the mod. You can retain only magic by disabling the inventory changes and rideable deer.
Vikings Summoner
A conventional mage fights alone at range. If you would rather command undead, Radamanto's Vikings Summoner introduces necromancy: staves, armor and summoning totems for every region from Meadows to Ashlands. Skeletons, ghosts and draugr now fight alongside you.

- Seven staves, from Funeral Dawn Staff to Profane Furnace Staff.
- Eleven summoning totems, beginning with Skull Totem in the Meadows and ending with Memorial Mage Totem in the Ashlands.
- Seven armor-and-cape sets for different biomes.
- Six grimoires and six eitr-and-health dishes.
- Necromancy Table and Advanced Necromancy Table stations with upgrades.
- Configurable summoned-creature voices.
- Put Vikings_Summoner.dll in BepInEx\plugins. Install AzuExtendedPlayerInventory to enable the grimoire slot. Additional languages use an external YAML file, with an example in the mod folder.
✅ How it affects the game: you fight with an entire squad instead of a lone staff. Different totems summon creatures ranging from basic skeletons to the powerful Memorial Mage.
NokepMagicStaffs
Vanilla does not let you choose a staff's element: use what is available. NokepMagicStaffs changes that with Blank Staff. Craft it at an ordinary workbench, then imbue it with one of six elements at the Arcane Workbench.

- Six elements: fire, water, earth, poison, ice and lightning-powered Arcane.
- Staves have seven levels, unlocked gradually through workbench progression from Meadows to Ashlands.
- Levels 3, 5 and 7 add special effects, from area explosions to two-second enemy freezes that do not affect bosses.
- The earth staff breaks stone and ore while sparing structures.
- Staves are one-handed, leaving room for a shield or torch.
- All damage parameters are easily edited in nokep.valheim.magic.cfg.
- Requires Jotunn and installation on server and clients. For early eitr, use the same author's NokepArmorSets.
✅ How the game changes: you choose the element, while damage scales by biome. A Swamp staff, for example, deals roughly 90% of the power of that region's one-handed mace. Eitr costs rise similarly. Version 1.0.0 was released very recently, on October 5, 2026, so test everything in a copied world first.
Gungnir Staff
Constantly rotating five staves through active slots is questionable fun. Samspelio's Gungnir Staff hides your arsenal inside Odin's spear. It acts as a roomy container and changes into the desired weapon on command. Craft it at an upgraded level-two Galdr Table.

- The spear contains a four-slot rack, upgraded to six and eight slots.
- Switch weapons with Alt+1…8. Alt+0 restores the ordinary spear form.
- A crystal on the shaft glows in the selected element's color.
- Recognizes and stores staves from other mods.
- Can be thrown and deals damage like the original spear.
- Required on the server and every client. Before uninstalling, empty the spear using gungnir empty or its stored items will be permanently lost.
✅ What changes: crafting requires a black core and Gjall trophy, so you must first visit the Mistlands. Note that the author has abandoned the project. Version 1.0.0 was released on August 30, 2026 and receives no further updates. Its page warns of AI-generated code with the AI Generated tag. Use it only at your own risk in a test world.
Epic Loot
Ordinary swords and armor found in Valheim always have the same stats. RandyKnapp and Vapok's Epic Loot changes that: chests and monsters drop randomly buffed equipment in four rarities, Magic, Rare, Epic and Legendary. Its inclusion in a magic article should not confuse you: there are no full spells, but the magic lies in equipment effects.

- Four rarity levels. The Ashlands update added a fifth, Mythic, although the base mod has no ready-made sets at that tier yet.
- An enchanting table enhances any item.
- Version 0.12 introduced runes. Identify an item's properties at the enchanting table, transfer the desired effect to an empty Runestone, then apply that rune to another weapon.
- Stats were heavily reduced for balance after Ashlands. A separate adjustment addon restores the old powerful values.
- Hold Shift while hovering an item to see the effect's minimum and maximum values.
- Full dedicated-server and multiplayer support.
- Extract the archive's files folder into BepInEx/plugins/EpicLoot. Put patches in BepInEx/config/EpicLoot/patches. After updates, check randyknapp.mods.epicloot.cfg: Enchanting Table — Table Features Active must be set to Rune.
✅ How it affects the game: chests stop feeling empty, and exploring gains purpose as you hunt ideal armor bonuses. The mod is in early access and conflicts with BetterUI; set showCustomTooltips = false in that mod's settings. Controller bugs also occur. Install files on the server and every client.
Fifth Edition Fantasy
Eitr and a couple of staves are not enough to turn Valheim into a deep RPG. For radical changes, install jdvanaus' Fifth Edition Fantasy. It rewrites the rules after fifth-edition tabletop D&D, with 58 races, 13 classes, 176 spells and 69 monsters. The level cap is twelve, with levels gained strictly after successive boss kills.

- Fifty-eight races, thirteen classes with forty-seven subclasses and fifty-two feats.
- One hundred seventy-six spells with original animations. Spell slots recover during short rests by a fire or long rests in bed.
- Magic consumes stamina; a basic cantrip costs eight. At Spellcasting level 100, the cost is halved.
- Sixty-nine SRD bestiary monsters, 102 magic artifacts and 40 enchanting runes.
- Hold O to open the Spellbook and press P to cast the selected ability.
- A bottomless loot bag, Bag of Holding, is crafted at a level-two workbench.
- Install BepInExPack and Jotunn, then extract the mod archive beside valheim.exe, or use Vortex. On Thunderstore, search for jdvanaus-Fifth_Edition_Fantasy. Everyone needs the mod because settings come from the server.
✅ What changes: vanilla pacing disappears completely, replaced by classes, spell slots and dice rolls. New characters start without a race or profession; assign them manually in the character window. Windows runs smoothly, macOS support is experimental, Linux is untested and console crossplay is unavailable.
How to install magic mods without crashes
- Every mod here relies on BepInEx.
- Install addons individually and load a test world, making the culprit immediately obvious if the setup breaks.
- Back up your world and character before installing anything.
- Download BepInExPack_Valheim through r2modman or Thunderstore Mod Manager to fetch dependencies automatically.
- Watch requirements carefully: NokepMagicStaffs, Gungnir Staff and Fifth Edition Fantasy need Jotunn; Smoothbrain's Backpacks enables MagicRevamp; AzuExtendedPlayerInventory unlocks Vikings Summoner's dedicated grimoire slot.
- Add the required files, launch and check functionality on a spare save.
- Keep every client's and the server's mod versions matched. After updating MagicPlugin, delete its old .cfg configuration.
Which Valheim magic mod suits your playstyle?
For familiar, unhurried pacing, choose MagicRevamp. To develop a mage from your first moments in the Meadows, pick MagicPlugin or ElPopeAdventures. Vikings Summoner provides ghost and skeleton armies, while NokepMagicStaffs offers flexible elemental magic with level progression.
Fifth Edition Fantasy rewrites the game from end to end, so keep it in a separate profile. Epic Loot focuses on hunting magical weapon properties rather than casting spells. Finally, reserve Gungnir Staff for a test world, as it has long been marked outdated.
