Oblivion Remastered Alchemy Guide – How To Brew Potions The Right Way

Alchemy in Oblivion Remastered isn’t just another crafting system you ignore until you’re desperately chugging health potions mid-boss fight. It’s the difference between becoming a walking pharmacy who laughs at damage or that guy frantically scrolling through menus while getting pummered by a Dremora Lord.

How Does Alchemy Work in Oblivion Remastered?

The system’s pretty straightforward once you get past the initial confusion. You grab a Mortar and Pestle (any alchemy table in a Mages Guild has them lying around), open your inventory, click the mortar, and boom – alchemy interface pops up.

You can combine up to four ingredients to create a potion or poison, but here’s the catch – at least two of those ingredients need to share the same effect. Each ingredient has up to four hidden magical properties, and your alchemy skill level determines how many you can actually see. At novice level you’re basically blind, seeing only one effect per ingredient. But as you level up, more effects reveal themselves.

The interface shows you ingredients on the left, effects in the middle, and your apparatus on the right. Click ingredients with matching effects, hit create, and congrats – you just made your first potion. Simple right? Now let’s talk about making potions that don’t suck.

Alchemy Skill Levels Explained

Your alchemy skill isn’t just a number that goes up. It fundamentally changes what you can do:

The jump from Apprentice to Journeyman is where I noticed the biggest difference. Suddenly you’re not just making basic healing potions – you’re brewing stuff that restores health and fortifies endurance and resists poison all at once.

Alchemy Tools Needed For Crafting Potions

Four tools exist in Oblivion’s alchemy system, and they all stack to improve your potions. Each comes in five quality tiers (Novice, Apprentice, Journeyman, Expert, Master), with Master-tier stuff providing the biggest bonuses.

You can find basic Novice-tier apparatus, like these Alembics, sitting on shelves in most Mages Guild halls. Just take them.

Most alchemy tables and Mages Guild headquarters around Cyrodiil have basic versions of these tools just sitting there waiting for you to grab them. Towns usually have merchants selling up to Expert-quality equipment. But Master-tier stuff? That only spawns in dungeon boss chests after you hit level 17, which brings us to…

How To Level Up Alchemy Fast?

Here’s what you need to know. Every potion you craft gives you 5 XP. Doesn’t matter if you’re combining rare Void Salts or common bread chunks – same XP either way. Eating raw ingredients gives 0.5 XP each, which is painfully slow and kinda gross when you think about it (who eats raw garlic cloves for science?).

Training with NPCs works too. You can train up to five times per character level. The trainers you want are Brotch Kalus in Bruma and Ardalin at the Bravil Mages Guild for mid-level training, then Sinderion at Westveld Tavern in Skingrad once you hit Expert.

The fastest method is just mass-crafting cheap potions. Here’s my tried-and-true approach for getting to level 25 quickly:

Grab a bunch of Bread Loaves, Cheese Wedges, Apples, and Corn. These ingredients are everywhere – inns, houses, general stores, sometimes just sitting on tables. Combine Bread + Cheese or Apple + Corn to make Restore Fatigue potions and also make some money by selling them. Don’t forget to haggle with merchants.

Do this for an hour while watching something on your second monitor and you’ll hit Apprentice level easy. Once you can see two effects per ingredient, the game opens up considerably.

Where to Find Master Alchemy Equipment

This is probably why you’re here. Master equipment can’t be bought from any merchant in the game. Zero. None. You have to find it in dungeons, and it only starts appearing in boss chests once your character reaches level 17 or higher.

Here’s the thing though – boss chest loot is randomized. You could clear ten dungeons and get nothing. Or you could get lucky on your first try. I’ve got a method that saves you from wasting hours running through dungeons hoping for good RNG.

The Save-Reload Method 

Echo Cave is hands down one of the best locations. It’s west of Bruma and has five boss chests in one dungeon. That’s five chances per run. But first you need to complete the Confront the King quest to make this cave accessible. Once you’ve done it – here’s what you do:

  1. Save before entering the dungeon
  2. Clear it and check all five boss chests
  3. If you don’t get any master tools, reload your save
  4. Repeat until you get what you need

Another one is Ceyatatar, an Ayleid ruin on the road between Skingrad and the Imperial City, because it has multiple boss chests that can contain master-level items.

The loot table rerolls every time you reload, so you’re basically spinning a slot machine with way better odds. It took me maybe six reloads to get all four master tools from Echo Cave alone.

Other solid locations if you want variety:

  • Silorn (southeast of Skingrad) – Part of the Mages Guild “Ambush” quest. Multiple boss chests.
  • Dark Fissure (southeast of Cheydinhal) – Another Mages Guild location, “Necromancer’s Moon” quest. Good chest density.
  • Moss Rock Cavern (north of Imperial City) – has several boss containers close together.

FWIW, I’d just farm Echo Cave until you get everything. Running between different dungeons wastes time when you can reload the same dungeon six times in twenty minutes.

Once you’ve got your master apparatus, store it in your house or a safe container. You don’t need to carry it around – just access it from storage when you’re crafting. Keeps your carry weight down and you won’t accidentally sell it to a merchant (yes I’ve done that, yes it hurt).

Most-used Potion Recipes 

Let’s skip the fifty recipes you’ll never touch and focus on the ones that matter. These are sorted by how often you’ll need them, not alphabetical order or whatever.

Restore Health Potion

This is the potion you’ll craft most. Combat in Oblivion hurts and health doesn’t regenerate on its own, so you’ll be downing these constantly.

Simple Recipe:

  • Aloe Vera Leaves + Boar Meat
  • Or Mugwort Seeds + Boar Meat
  • Or Venison + Mugwort Seeds

Where to Find Ingredients:

  • Fly Amanita grows like weeds in Imperial City Cemetery
  • Boar Meat drops from… boars (shocking I know). They’re all over the wilderness
  • Aloe Vera appears along roads near the Imperial City
  • Cheese Wheels sit in every inn and house in the game

Advanced Recipe (for when your alchemy is higher):

  • Void Essence + Ectoplasm + Boar Meat + Aloe Vera Leaves

This creates a multi-effect potion that does five different things at once. But Painted Troll Fat is rare (only six painted trolls in the entire game and they don’t respawn), so save this recipe for emergency situations or showing off.

Restore Magicka Potion

If you’re running a mage build, magicka management is everything. These potions keep you casting when you’ve drained your pool nuking enemies.

Common Ingredients:

  • Flax Seeds + Steel-Blue Entoloma Cap
  • Void Salts + Bog Beacon Asco Cap
  • Ectoplasm (always works, easy to find)

Best Source: Void Salts and Ectoplasm both drop from Daedra in Oblivion planes. Run through a couple gates and you’ll have more than you need.

Pro Recipe (Journeyman level):

  • Water Hyacinth Nectar + Void Salts + Blister Cap

This one also fortifies your maximum magicka temporarily, which means a bigger spell pool for tough fights.

Restore Fatigue Potion

Fatigue potions are crucial for melee builds like classic warrior – no stamina means reduced damage.

Ingredients:

  • Bread Loaf + Corn
  • Or Cheese Wedge + Apple

These four ingredients are everywhere. Inns have bread and cheese on every table. Farms grow corn and other stuff like grapes, tomatoes, potatoes. You can collect hundreds of these in an hour of casual looting.

Each potion gives the same 5 XP as complex potions made from rare ingredients. So ignore expensive stuff and just spam-craft these. Your alchemy will shoot up and you’ll even make some gold.

If you're comfortable using console commands, you can speed this up even more. But honestly the bread method is fast enough without cheating.

Cure Disease Potion

Diseases in Oblivion are annoying but manageable. Except for Porphyric Hemophilia, which is the disease that turns you into a vampire. You have roughly three in-game days (72 hours) after infection to cure it before vampirism becomes permanent.

Recipe:

  • Mandrake Root + Shepherd’s Pie
  • Or Mandrake Root + Root Pulp

Critical timing: The cure only works on stage one of the vampire disease. Once you sleep and it progresses, you’re locked into the vampire questline. Keep a few Cure Disease potions in your inventory always, especially if you’re fighting vampires or exploring caves.

Chapels also cure diseases for free if you pray at their altar, but that requires fast traveling to a city. Sometimes you’re deep in a dungeon and need the cure right now.

Invisibility Potion

Invisibility breaks combat AI completely. Pop one of these and enemies lose track of you, letting you reposition or escape bad situations.

Recipe (requires Journeyman level, 50+ alchemy):

  • Vampire Dust + Redwort Flower
  • Or Vampire Dust + Stinkhorn Cap

Duration by quality:

  • Weak: 15 seconds
  • Normal: 30 seconds
  • Strong: 45 seconds

Where to Get Vampire Dust: Kill vampires, loot their corpses. Each dust has multiple useful effects. Vampire lairs respawn enemies so you can farm this indefinitely.

One huge downside – invisibility breaks the moment you interact with anything. Open a door? Visible. Attack? Visible. Loot a container? Visible. It’s more of a tactical repositioning tool than a permanent stealth solution.

Chameleon Potion

Chameleon is what invisibility wishes it could be. Instead of making you fully invisible, it blends you with the environment (think Predator cloaking). The kicker? It doesn’t break when you perform actions.

You can attack, loot, cast spells, open doors – all while remaining partially invisible. Stack enough Chameleon effect and you become essentially undetectable even while doing whatever you want.

Novice Recipe:

  • Bloodgrass (only ingredient with Chameleon at Novice level)

Journeyman+ Recipes:

  • Daedra Silk + Radish
  • Venison + Columbine Root Pulp
  • St. Jahn’s Wort Nectar + Elytra Ichor (Shivering Isles)

Chameleon is honestly kinda broken. Get your Chameleon value high enough through potions and enchanted gear and you can walk through entire dungeons without enemies reacting. The game becomes a joke.😊

Paralysis Poison

Paralysis shuts down enemies completely for a few seconds. Apply this to a weapon and your next hit freezes the target, giving you free attacks while they’re helpless.

Recipe (Journeyman level):

  • Imp Gall + Milk Thistle Seeds

Duration:

  • Weak: 3 seconds
  • Normal: 5 seconds
  • Strong: 7 seconds

Even 3 seconds is enough to get in two or three free hits, which can turn close fights in your favor.

Paralysis works on most humanoid enemies and creatures. Doesn’t work on ghosts, vampires or certain undead types, but for bandits, guards, and wildlife it’s devastating.

Alchemy Ingredients: What to Collect and What to Ignore

Oblivion has something like 150+ ingredients scattered across Cyrodiil. Most of them are forgettable. Here’s what actually matters.

This stuff is so common you’ll probably have dozens of each just from casual exploration. Don’t overthink it early on, just grab everything you see.

Running Oblivion gates is super profitable because you get tons of these ingredients plus leveled loot. I usually come out of a gate with 5-10 + Void Salts alone.

Ingredients Farming Locations

Vanilla alchemy is functional but clunky. These mods fix the annoying parts:

Auto Confirm Poison – Removes the annoying confirmation prompt every time you try to create a poison. Just crafts it automatically, saving you one extra click per potion.

Important On Top – Sorts inventory by importance/value rather than alphabetical. Your best ingredients appear at the top instead of buried in a list of 200 items.

None of these change game balance or add new content – they just make the existing system less tedious to use. Install all four and alchemy becomes way less of a hassle.

Some Essential Alchemy Tips

Some random observations from spending too many hours brewing potions:

  • Ingredient Management – Use the alchemy menu’s filter by effect feature. Click an effect like “Restore Health” and the menu shows only ingredients with that effect. Saves so much time compared to manually scrolling through 150+ ingredients.
  • Batch Crafting – If you’re making healing potions, make 50 at once rather than crafting them one at a time as you need them. Future you will thank you when you’re mid-dungeon and running low.
  • Race Selection – Bretons get +10 alchemy as a racial bonus, making them the best choice for alchemy-focused characters. Wood Elves and High Elves both get +5. Every point helps when you’re trying to identify ingredient effects early.
  • Apparatus Placement – Keep your master apparatus in one location and always craft there.
  • Combat Application – Pop your Fortify Health and Resist Magic potions before entering dangerous areas, then focus on healing potions during actual fights.
  • Poison Application – You can only have one poison active on a weapon at a time. Applying a new poison overwrites the old one. So don’t waste expensive poisons by applying them repeatedly – one coat lasts until you hit something.

What’s the best Way To Progress from Zero to Master Alchemist?

Here’s my recommended progression if you’re starting fresh:

Level 0-25 (Novice to Apprentice):

  • Collect bread, cheese, apples, corn from every settlement you visit
  • Spam-craft Restore Fatigue potions exclusively
  • Should take 1-2 hours of casual looting and crafting
  • Sell the potions and make some septims.

Level 25-50 (Apprentice to Journeyman):

  • Start collecting Fly Amanita Cap from Imperial City Cemetery
  • Hunt for Boar Meat and Venison
  • Craft Restore Health potions
  • These actually sell for decent money so you profit while leveling

Level 50-75 (Journeyman to Expert):

  • Farm Oblivion gates for Void Salts and Ectoplasm
  • Craft Restore Magicka potions (much higher value)
  • Experiment with multi-effect potions using three ingredients
  • Your potions are now good enough to rely on in combat

Level 75-100 (Expert to Master):

  • Continue farming Daedric ingredients
  • Craft complex potions with four ingredients for maximum effects
  • Money is no longer an issue so craft whatever you need
  • Expert rank’s guaranteed bonus potion means you’re doubling output

The whole journey takes maybe 10-15 hours if you’re playing normally, or 2 minutes if you use the duplication exploit (but where’s the fun in that?).

Now You Are Ready To Become Master Alchemist!

Alchemy gets a bad reputation because early levels feel pointless. Your potions are weak, you can barely identify ingredients, and bought potions seem better anyway. But once you hit Journeyman level, the system clicks.

Multi-effect potions let you buff multiple stats with one drink. A good potion might restore health + fortify endurance + resist poison all at once. That’s three effects from one inventory slot, which matters when you’re deep in a dungeon with limited carrying capacity.

Alchemy also generates stupid amounts of money. A strong Restore Magicka potion crafted with master apparatus can sell for 100+ gold each. Craft twenty of those and you’ve just made 2,000 gold from ingredients that took ten minutes to collect.

How Can Alchemy Support Low-Armor, Magic-Light Builds?

Alchemy enables mages to use Fortify Magicka + Restore Magicka + Fortify Intelligence potions to dramatically increase spellcasting capacity and access higher-tier spells beyond normal Magicka limits. Additionally, Fortify Willpower potions accelerate Magicka regeneration—critical for spell-heavy builds with minimal armor. Low-armor mages can craft Restore Health + Restore Magicka + Fortify Endurance potions as cheap defensive alternatives to heavy armor.

When Do Hidden Effects Unlock?

Progressive unlock schedule: Hidden ingredient effects unlock every 25 Alchemy levels:​​

  • Level 0-24 (Novice): Recognize 1st effect only
  • Level 25-49 (Apprentice): Unlock 2nd effect
  • Level 50-74 (Journeyman): Unlock 3rd effect
  • Level 75-99 (Expert): Unlock 4th effect (all four effects revealed)
  • Level 100 (Master): All effects accessible; unlock single-ingredient potion crafting​

Each ingredient has exactly four possible effects—no effects are hidden beyond level 100.

How Often Do Alchemy Ingredients Respawn?

Plants respawn on 72-hour in-game cycles. Waiting 24 hours three times in-game resets all vegetation (same timing as cell respawns). This is the default vanilla system plants respawn automatically when their cell resets. However, a mod exists that changes this to daily (23 hours) respawn rates if you prefer faster ingredient regeneration. Without mods, the standard answer is every 3 in-game days.​​

How Big is the Gap Between Novice and Master Apparatus?

The gap is 10x+ more powerful. For example:​​

  • Novice Mortar and Pestle: +2.5 Alchemy skill bonus
  • Master Mortar and Pestle: +25 Alchemy skill bonus (10x improvement)​

For effect enhancement, the Retort increases positive effects by 5% at Novice versus 50% at Master (10x multiplier), and the Calcinator increases all effects by 20% at Novice versus 200% at Master (10x multiplier). This means master-tier potions are roughly 10 times more potent than novice-tier potions, making the tool tier progression one of the most impactful upgrades in alchemy.​
